Fragments of bearing cages in oil

Had my 24000 km desmo service done yesterday. Mechanic found 2 of those exact plastic pieces and a metal shaving that is very springy.
He said it is from plastic bearing cages.... That is concerning.

WTF is wrong with these “certified mechanics” I have had these motors apart many times. Can someone show me a plastic bearing cage in a Ducati engine besides the small gear roller assemblies which are way too small to produce the plastic pieces shown in any of these photos. Also if one of the small gear cages breaks, you will have the rollers clinging to the magnet.

I have found in my Ducati travels that probably 90% of certified Ducati mechanics have never done a V2 or V4 tear down which accounts for the continued stream of dog .... information they hand out to their customers. Look at the very first post in the thread “the tech said ceramic bearings and cages in the crank and gearbox”. That clown has never seen the inside of a Ducati motor.

Endo, where do you think these pieces are coming from? I've never gone that deep into one of these engines, but never believed the bearing cages theory. I've heard others say it's pieces from the stator. Thoughts?

Honestly, I don't know. Now I say that not really looking into it but I have a couple of motors apart right now so I will do a deep dive this weekend. Some people have said that maybe the composite pieces are something from the factory assembly process and maybe not from the motor itself. These motors are quite random with respect to the amount and type of material found in the captive and filtration systems. Not sure if anyone has actually done a material assay on any of the plug magnet material or material captured in the filter. Besides the paper filter and the nylon filter in the pickup assembly there is an oil pump filter as well not accessible without splitting the case so who knows what lives in there although it is a post main filter. I will poke around.

Hi Endo,
I also agree with your perspective regarding the confusion on feedback on this 'issue'
it seems that there is a little bit of deniability on the side of Ducati with this, and this may lead to some stupid 'i don't know' comments from the dealerships.
I have a trusted Ducati tech I use in Germany, who is very open with me ( and also stripped a few motors for me) ad he mentioned that there was some internal memo on this, and they were advised a strip down was not required...
would be interested to see your findings of an examination of the generator to see where these items come from..
as I mentioned earlier in this thread I also had some of these bits in my oil shortly after a motor rebuild, and have done 3 oil changes since with no more issues.

Those “plastic pieces” are desmo baby teeth

The engines were all born with about 10 of them and they are now in oil that has already been disposed of, the bottom of yer pan (waiting to come out next time you change the oil), or in your pick up

They won’t hurt anything but if this concerns you have the tech pull the pan and pickup and clean both. Which is not a bad practice anyways for motors with a wet clutch : )

Hey there. Any update on those pieces?? I just did my oil change and saw those as well. Looks plastic to me.
