In my experience (with other brands), a high quality 520 chain and hard anodized aluminum sprockets will last longer than the OEM parts.
Keep in mind it isnt just shaving weight (with the 520 kit, aluminum sprocket and lightweight carrier), it is also shaving rotational and unsprung mass. 1-3lbs might not sound like much, but you shave 1-3lbs of rotational mass and you have accomplished something.
With all of that being said, if it was a street bike only, i wouldnt bother. When i buy bikes for the street, i will run the OEM stuff till it wears out, then make a change. I am not worried about saving weight on the street, it doesn't matter.
