I was wondering if any one here has tried an 899 shock on a 1199 for the road?

Ok - I should have said on the Base, not the S or the R.

The 899 has a softer ride quality for UK roads due to its rear shock and its suitable for the bike but if I stick that on an 1199 base I am not sure if it will take the power and may get nervous under acceleration. The base shock is rubbish as you know and it is way too stiff for UK roads, that is why I thought if an 899 shock would work better..

i am in no doubt that the showa front and rear combo are a far better deal then the Marzocchi/Sachs combo.. and a very fine alternative for the more track oriented Ohlinses... and even on the track they will stand their ground..

Really, why that ? Ok the Sachs is not top notch but why is the Showa better?

Showa's aren't bad. But I've never come across one that didn't need the valve and shim stacks redone (even when new). They've kept Race Tech in business for years. :)

i think Showa are a bit undervalued. And there must be some sense in a package from 1 manufacturor beating 2 , no? I remember showas doing a great job in the 916-998 series.. especially as street stuff..

The 899 has a Sachs rear shock, just like the 1199 standard model, but the one on the 899 is cheaper. It lacks the ride height adjuster that the 1199 Sachs rear has, and overall if you look at them side by side the 899 one just looks "cheaper". I'm putting a revalved 1199 Sachs shock on my 899, mainly so I can get the ride height adjuster for tuning at the track.

Cheers for that useful info, I did not realise the Sachs 899 shock did not have the ride height adjuster.

Coming to your revalving of the 1199 shock, is there a noticeable difference? Would it better to just get a TTX MKII instead?

Would very much like to hear details about your revalving of the Sachs. Could be a viable alternative to going all-in on an Ohlins/Penske/Whatever replacement.

I'll keep everyone posted after I have a chance to get it out to the track. I had the TTX MKII on my 1199, and it was really good, but I also rode several stock Panigales on the track (both standard and S-models) and I never found the stock Sachs shock on the 1199 to be all that bad as far as damping quality, as long as you got the correct spring rate for your weight and have the sag set. It should be better for a track bike with track-specific valving in it (specifically moving the rebound damping curve up the scale so we're in the middle of the adjustment range at the track rather than clear at the end of the range), but whether it's as good (or even close) to the TTX MKII, I won't know until I try it. Unfortunately that's still 2 months away until the start of our track season...... :(
