A conversation about Ducati...

+1

I can understand the rational for only needing to wait 20 seconds to a minute before riding, what I would like to know is why leaving the bike idling for a few minutes isn't recommended, I can't see how it would do any damage.

Any ideas?

+1

I've idled at light for several minutes...am I harming the bike?

I prefer to let oil warm up. Was not told by my tech otherwise. Why not let the bike get into optimal operating temps, especially when it's 30degrees outside? I listen to the idle. When it drops; I know it's prime time.

I don't think idling once at operating temperature is a problem.

Common practise with modern oils and engines is to hop in and drive or ride.

The days of warming up the old car like your grandfather or father did are over.

My M3 and my GT3 manual, for example, both specifically mentioned not to warm the car up but to start it and drive straight away, obviously driving with low revs and smoothly until the temps normalise.

I believe the main issue with warming a car or bike up is a lack of combustion temps which don't allow a proper seal to form between the piston rings and the cylinder wall, allowing fuel into the oil and decreasing the effectiveness and life of the oil.

It is possible that with long maintenance schedules/time between oil changes being a selling point for cars and bikes these days that the issue is more prevalent than it used to be.

I am not a mechanic, but for me I ride/drive pretty much straight away, gently, and always change oil more often than scheduled anyway.

Great passing of the info Duc. Much appreciated.

Only question I would have asked you (but forgot to ask) was why is there no hole in the cowl for oil level.

Unique means not continuing to produce the EXACT same bike each year. Wish they were not doing the Tri in 2013 and that they made them serialized like with the 1198 Corse. I agree that one may as well get the damn R if they are gonna keep the Tri around. Then again with everything I put into mine it exceeds cost of the R at this point.

But then again if we all got what we wished for things would be alot different eh?

Good article.

Unique means only one, the Tricolore is not unique.

+1 If I would have known all this I would have went with the R based on cost for what you get...kinda of irritated about this and the continual release of the Tricolore.

I totally understand where your coming from, however, there is a simple way to relieve your irritation.......

..... just go in the garage and stare at it for a few minutes :D

+1. It really is a completely gorgeous bike.

While staring at the Tricolore consider that if Ducati are giving the Tricolore a good run for another year then it is self evident that the bike is a winner/awesomely dialled then it is much more possible that we can look forward to a much more expanded range of Ducati Corse and Performance enhancements for the Tricolore.

I Love the Tricolore. The release of the R makes me happy the RS and Tricolore makes me glow.

Your frame reference number dials you into what your position is on the Panigale evolution line.

Why? Did Ducati promised you the tricolor would be a limited/serialized bike?

If you must have the latest/greatest then sell yours and get the R, repeat the process again in 2014 because something else better will always come along.

You have a beautiful bike, why can't you be happy with that.

I too was disappointed when I heard they were doing the Tri again in 2013 as I was under the impression that it would only be a one year run.
That said I totally agree with your point and don't get at all people getting miffed when the next bike comes out and is better either real or perceived.
Do people really think Ducati or any company is going to stop developing and trying to make better products??

If you always want to wait for the best you will be perpetually waiting as year after year new stuff....and hopefully kick ... stuff will keep coming out.
It doesn't negate that fact that the bikes we have now are great bikes.

+10 my friends!

I do seriously love my bike. Wish I could've kept the 1198s Corse also for a different ride once in awhile. I think the raw aluminum tank on that one , w black n red colors, popped a lot better than the 1199 R. It's simple human behavior to always want something new and exciting, but unless there was a way to lease a sportbike for every year we'll just have to love the one you're with and make the best of it!

Happy Frigging New Year!!! ;)

Just before Nikon bought out the D4 camera all my semi-pro photographer friends who used Nikon went crazy in order to get one soonest. On the day of release another pro photographer friend posted on a forum "Hey guess what, my Nikon D3s has not suddenly stopped working today!" Still makes me smile. He still takes better photos than me too.

The D4 is so yesterday, I got traded my D300s in on a D800 months ag. It is an awesome video camera as well. :) Cameras I can keep up on the latest/greatest, Ducatis not so much...

Maybe they suggest getting on and going after 20 seconds as their fix for the smoke, since it is much harder to notice the smoke while moving. ;)

Thanks for the info, a fantastic post.

Look...of course there was no promise of the limited production but it seemed that the previous Tri was a little more limited production.

The point is that after spending that kind of $ it stings a little when they release the R for a few bucks more and you can't even build the Tri to match that for the same $. If it was like the previous R at $40k, no big deal I wasn't planing on spending that much.

So it's to be expected that something better will come out...or why would they continue to build and sell bikes? I'm not irritated about that cause who could be? It's the nature of the market.

I am very happy with my bike and love it and would not sell it to take a loss just to get the next best thing 6 months later. It wasn't about have the best thing out there cause I feel I have that now. My issue was the price point that the next best thing was released at.

I'm shocked nobody latched onto the comment about how important it was for all Ducati owners to run the full rev range in every gear after break-in. Challenge accepted!
