ABS on the track?

My ABS setting is OFF now. Why? Well, when I was on the track and making my way through traffic - another rider decided to throw his hand up and slow down while lining up with the inside curbing (where I was passing him) - I had the ABS active front only - I squeezed the lever and it pulsed hard and wouldn't allow my bike to slow. It released the caliper too abruptly when I was on the threshold of locking up. Not a good feeling. At least with ABS off, I am aware of the limits of braking and can control the modulation myself of the lever.

Over the winter time I intend on removing the complete ABS system and all of its components.
Your bike is broken, start a new hate thread and then get it fixed :D. But really, something is wrong. ABS will never prevent the bike from braking, it just releases some to prevent lockup.
Not to be a d*ck, how are you aware of the limits of braking, have you wrecked and now know the exact limits for every situation? I think you see what I'm getting at. I understand ABS is not a must to be a great rider, but even the best riders have acknowledged its performance and safety. If I got paid to race, I wouldnt worry about it so much.

ABS on front only as well. I too have locked em up so hard I felt like the back end was coming up. Its great, I love it.

Only doing track days, no racing, but I run with the ABS on, and it has helped me a few times. I can still lift the rear just fine, and then some. For me, the electronics are better than I am, running about 10% off lap record pace. I'd say for skilled guys running down to 5% off lap record pace, it probably starts to get intrusive.

I am the LAST person for a hate thread. I own more than 2 1199 Panigale's and have crashed at the limits on a few occasions. Love the bike and am developing my race bike with CORSA parts and Marelli electronics over the winter. So you do sound like a d*ck.

:p

Lol, you win. It wasnt meant to be a challenge. I'm married with 3 kids, any fight I had in me got beat out of me years ago :D .

Happy turkey day

So why ABS front only??? I do not track my bike..but plan to... So I need to understand this dynamic.....

It's programmed that way for race mode . Alternatively you just turn it off .

I get that...but why would I not want ABS on the rear??? Am I missing something here?? Probably...but always willing to learn...:)

Yes that's the default but I suspect it is so the really fast guys can 'back it in' by locking the rear. Seems not to harm anything and may save a crash by keeping it on for the front wheel. Doesn't limit rear wheel lift or locking at all.
You could set that race mode to off or any of the levels. You pick.

I can't imagine turning off unless you feel it interfering with the braking. I haven't felt that and I have lifted the rear. I also use the front brake while leaned over and hope it helps from tucking the front. Can't guarantee that as I haven't fully tested.

Front only is the ticket. But again... most guys don't ride loose and it probably wouldn't be a huge issue. I also think the race setting with front only allows the rear to lift more which is at times something that happens.

I have a non ABS racebike. The reason being is that we just simply built from the cheapest platform.

All these guys building Corse bikes and fancy, smancy electronics and running track days and mid pack racing makes me giggle. I just ride the damn thing. I've ridden ABS and it doesn't intrude and it doesn't have that pulse that most think will happen like in their cars on ice. It's like the TC stuff. Most won't even really feel it working. When we look at the data stuff, it shows the spikes and you can feel it kick in, but you'd be amazed at how much you can dance on the edge before out of shape.

The electronics are pretty damn awesome on these things. Amazing. They can really get you faster - once you start trusting and using them.

ABS is totally great for racing. We just don't have it because it was an option and we saved some cash to put into the motor...

Hmmm. Was trying to find a post on how to remove abs completely...after reading this, I'm going to try it out. I gutted the abs on my BMW s1000 and installed brembo rcs master with race pads which I planned on doing with the S, I guess I'll wait. Anyone change their master with the abs? I have an rcs that I want to use.

Better do some searching on here. The last I recall was that the OEM Brembo MC that is matched up to the M50 calipers has some unique differences and changing to a commonly-used Brembo RCS with the OEM calipers was actually a step backwards due to the piston/stroke not being optimized. The fix that I recall was that if you were that serious about improving the 1199 braking performance you had to go to the $2,000+ billet calipers (per side) and billet MC.

$4k in brakes buys a lot of track time and tires...

That is correct, the typical Brembo 19mm master cylinder upgrade is not spec'd for the Panigale due to the M50 calipers having much smaller pistons than prior versions. Last time I checked, Brembo said they were working on a racing master for the Panigale, but as far as I know it's not available yet. I'd try the stock system first, bleed some high-temp fluid through and possibly replace the pads with a racing pad compound and you might find that's all you need. That's what I'm planning to do with my 899, after going the full upgrade route (master & calipers) on my 1199 previously.
