Good day all,

I am a proud and very broke owner of full Akra TI system and its going to be in my hot little hands this Wednesday.

For the experienced people that have done this install, my question is how hard is it to install??

My experience with my bike is i have changed mirrors, fender eliminators, barends, clutch cover. I don't do any services on it myself (All Factory), and taking fairing of a few times for different reasons. I have currently installed slip on Termi's which was fitted by my local stealers (dealer), in which i just pulled out the DB killers.

I am not 100% sure that i am capable to do it, any advice tips or do i just take it to a professional to get fitted??

Thanks for reading. :)

thanks for the link B9009b, i have watched that video so many times while waiting, as its time lapsed is tough to see. I have read all instructions on a PDF i have downloaded. how good is it they give you pictures as well as step by step instructions.

Seems so expensive to make a stuff up that is my only worry but i should man up and give it ago. The sense of accomplishment would be high

And yea what can i loose by trying i not sure...

My biggest suggestion would be to take your time. Block off a whole damn day if you have to. Rushing to failure is the easiest thing to do when working on bikes.

Also, tape everything off (when the bike is cool obviously) that you don't want to see wrench marks on. Engine cases, swingarm, radiator/cooler, etc. When your wrench slips, your won't be cursing yourself for dinging or scratching a part completely unrelated ot the task at hand. Good luck!

Hi mate,
I think you will be fine installing yourself if you have done those other jobs. I am no mechanic but like trying to do things on the bike and I bumbled my way thru it. Did it over about 2 x 5 hour sessions but I waste a lot of time cleaning as I go.

Anyway a few tips.

Get a spring pulling tool which will be handy at the end for fitting the springs.

Also the nuts that hold the exhaust headers on which are either 8mm or 10 mm, (cannot remember now), the top one for the horizontal cylinder is a bitch to get to.

If you look carefully at the instructions that Akra supply you will see marks on the inside of the radiator which I suspect happened when they worked on the demo bike. Anyway, if you can get hold of a ratchting ring spanner in the correct size that will help.

I used a very small ratchet with a small flexible coupling. Even so I spent a lot of time removing bolts from the radiator and pushing the whole lot forward towards the front wheel to get better access. I also changed to the McCool fluid in the radiator at the same time but that made fu%k all difference.

Back to akra fitting. Be careful removing the sensors from the exhaust. I think its better to remove both ends so when you undo you do not twist the wires up. Just follow the wires, and unplug at the other end its easy. You will have to cut some cable ties but just put new ones on.

I fitted without the pillion pegs as I do not carry pillions on the 1199. So no dremel cutting of the nice carbon exhaust shield. I also purchased some stick on foil heat shield and added it to the carbon heat shield. I did not do this to stop heat on my leg because nothing will do that. I added it to slow the heat transfer to the heat shield itself. My heat shield is still going strong with no signs of going brittle.

I also changed oil and filter while I had the fairings off and all the exhaust removed. Leave it overnight to drain. (Turn the engine over by hand in gear and a little more oil will come out to.)

My last tip. Clean the exhaust very carefully of any finger marks as per the instructions before you fire up. Clean the exhaust very carefully of any finger marks as per the instructions before you fire up. Yes I said that twice on purpose. :) I test rode without fitting the fairings on which makes it easy to check for loose stuff after the first test ride.

Remember your ear plugs. Have fun fitting, I did. And BTW you purchased the best exhaust for this bike. Forget the cheap and nasty Termi stuff. :D

Hope it helps out a little. Good luck.

Not just alitte, alot. Thank you for those nitty gritty tips that normally can make something a lot quicker, if you ever had to do it a second time. I am replacing my termi slips with a full system so i am pretty excited with the change.

Didnt think of changing the oil and stuff on removal which is a handy tip due to everything being optimally easy to access. Might be a odd question did you use rear and front stand or just a rear stand, or even nothing??

Thanks again

I used rear tire axle lift

You will start by removing tank and seat. then fairings, then rad fan.

I needed to grind down a 3mm I believe to fit in the tight space for the rad fan mount.

Undo two lower seat mount brackets, and loosen top two to lift subframe for needed clearance.

Take off exhaust, install new one.

You might have two bungs that need to come off old exhaust and install on new one if the holes are present.

Give yourself a good day

I used large channel locks for springs and it was simple

I just used the rear pit bull I have. I did not find I had to remove the seat or do anything with the rear subframe. I did not have to remove the tank either. I just followed the Akra instructions. Hope it all goes well.

Well all done and ty everyone for you advice. The header pipe 3 bolts oh my god. What a nighmare, but finally got it off that alone took me 1 hour to get work out how to make 1cm movements to loosen those bolts....

Install went well though havent started up yet more than 5 secs its late here 10.30pm so i dont want to get stabbed by the neighbours. But from what i have heard so far so good. Going to be testing and tightening bolts again after a short 3min ride tomorrow.

Took me about 6.5 hours to do, but dinner in between so that was roughly 20mins and i had a friend visitor which couldnt stop talking, and neighbours coming over to ask whats going on. All in all without distractions couldve been quicker

The standard '14 Heat shield was a little bugger too even with the subframe lifted up which imo did make it easier. No sensor warnings on dash so everything is okay there. Loosening that O2 sensor the wires get turned as well so you have to watch out for that. I stripped one hex bolt but i had a spare anyway so that was lucky make sure you use good Hex keys or they can strip away the bolt pretty quick especially if you slip.

Lastly the install of the exhausts themselves was really hard i had a tough time pushing them up high enough, but when i realised that the rear pipe which connects to the split pipe wasnt in far enough that was alot easier to manage, well kinda it was tight! and alot of effort was required there, i did tap up with a soft head mallet.

Thank you all for your advice everything was read and taken into account cant wait to ride tomorrow. Pipes still a shiny silver at the moment.

Pictures to come shortly but to say the difference between my termi slips and akra TI full system, i would say that it has more of a louder growl, and deeper. Very happy with results and blue'ing has started to happen now. Rain is being a bugger in the arvo's when i want to get onto the bike after work so i have not taken it far yet.

Thats why the ratchting ring spanner would have come in handy. Be worth buy one just for this job. If I had known I would have bought one. As I mentioned disconnecting both ends of the wire stops the twisting. Still you did it in quick time.

Which bolt did you strip ?

I stripped one of the radiator ones that i was attempting to move forward to get into those 3 header bolts. Was not a bad thing but i had replacement for it. The nuts that hold in the exhast header is quite a soft copper or something they need to be handled with care i noticed as well.
