Well, it's the final race weekend for the weakly supported and aired AMA pro racers here at NJMP. MarkNYC and myself are just arriving here now to hopefully witness our pal Josh Hayes retake the #1 plate again which he never should have lost in the first place! (Won't go into that)

Thankfully I received my annual VIP invitations and passes from Graves Yamaha again and my wife couldn't make it, so therefore Mark gets to relax in their Hospitality Tent with me and eat all their chef cooked food- which he has been restricted to only so much! Lmao!

Hoping for a great weekend and will post some pics when possible. Last year I was rebuked for wearing a Ducati shirt when I arrived so we must Don the Yamaha gear before we walk into their area now. Until later...............

Have fun guys. Sorry I couldnt attend. Leaving for the other side of the world in a few days. Post up lots of pics.

Maybe I'll get on tv again like Russell and I did last year! ;)

Mark just got a bunch of signed swag and the head of Yamaha gave him a sweet Graves Team shirt- bit NOT me! :( lol

Well folks it's all over what a race in the wet. I won't say who one cause there is no spoiler alert on this thread

Great Weekend !

Well, Mark & I went to the last AMA races for the year up in New Jersey Motorsports park this past weekend and met up with all my Pro Racer buddies (list too long to write out) and met some of the pros I never spoke with before. One of the nicest low key guys I met was Dane Westby who totally rips out the Daytona Sportbike class (does awesome burnouts after race is over - probably down to the dam rims!! lol)

Hung out with the infamous Scott Russell as I do every year and sat up in the tower where they call the race from -Anyone who doesn't know Scott and goes by what they hear from him calling races, probably had same thoughts I had on him long ago. That he was like a punch drunk southern guy rambling on and not all that impressive. HOWEVER - I will say this, that guy is without any doubt one of the BEST and kindest guys ever in person and goes WAY out of his way to make you a friend of his!! Truly salt of the earth folks- I swear! He LOVES hanging with my dog Russell - which I had to break news to him that he wasnt named after Scott. The water bowl was last years gift from the Yamaha team and signed by everyone. Speaking of that - The guy who won the #1 plate last year (by total fluke and bad calls against Josh Hayes) is Josh Herrin. If you know about this Josh you know he was just fired from the Moto 2 team that picked him up last year after his AMA win. IMHO he was NOT ready at all to go overseas for this, and obviously couldn't even finish a race despite get anywhere up in top 25. He showed up this weekend but no one gave him anything worthy of a handshake more or less, despite any true fan love. LOL. Poor guy walked around by himself all weekend. Mark attended a ...... contest Sat night and Herrin bumps into him at bar- literally, and the guy has zero personality.

Having "hot pit" passes enables you to walk thru the hot pit areas where they warm up all the bikes and where the racers mount up before their race. The smell of race gas is overpowering for sure! The head of Graves Yamaha racing gave me all sorts of cool swag from their 10x10 posters, bunch of race team shirts, a HUGE cardboard cut out of Josh Hayes standing behind his R1 (Wait until you guys see what I do with this! lol) and probably about 50 cans of Monster Energy drinks since that is their sponsor!

Since I cannot ride like I used to back in my racer days, I just attend these events to stay connected. So that was our weekend and as usual the 4+ hour ride up was SMOOTH in my 2500. BTW - Jersey has the BEST prices on diesel fuel Ive ever seen too! Here in Virginia you are at $3.78 on best days. Lowest price I saw in Jersey was $3.23 which was a definite fill up to say the least!

We didnt take too many photos since the coolness of it all has worn off now. Here are a few pics for anyone who knows who I am with. I ran into Eric Wood in the tower which floored me since I hadn't seen him in over 20 years! The Penguin Racing School was the one I attended up in Loudon, NH to get my CCS race license many moons ago! Him, his brother Jeff, and father Jerry are all legends in racing and run a super school.

Thats it folks. Nothing special to report and you have probably been bored reading this to this point. LOL. Only excitement was the Superbike race Sat in luring rain and watching Roger Hayden and Josh Hayes scrap it out with each other for the win - which Josh initially won but they took it away saying he passed on a yellow flag - so he took 2nd that day, but of course swept the field on Sunday taking home the win and more importantly the #1 plate again this year - right where it belongs!!

Gunny out..................

ok since gunny wrote all that i guess i can say now that Josh Hayes won again. 4 out of 5 not too shabby (really 5 out of 5 the other guy never beat him head to head only after point deductions). For those that dont know 2011 last race of the season Josh road a yamaha and actually finished 7th. if you want to take a peek at that on motogp.com if you have the pass.

Needless to say, we had another super weekend there with their hospitality didnt we Mark? Makes attending an AMA race so much more special when you get the carpet laid out for you doesn't it man?

Feel free to toss on some other cool moments Mark. Like your Dunlop Hat! :)

dunlop hat ok went talking to the boys over at dunlop and were asking them a few questions about the new gpa which is reversible and the q3 which i ride and absolutely love. Guy gives me some hats and no sooner did i have the hat did garrett gerloff josh hayes and scott russel sign the thing pretty cool.

when you ride a track as a novice then see these guys run the same track it truly is amazing how good they are. turn 10 is the hardest turn at njmp so i sat and watched by turn 10. josh, garrett jake etc just were killing the track in all areas.

real cool was the KTM rider crashed on sunday (the crash wasnt cool i dont wish for that) what was cool is they stayed and tested on monday (my track day) he rode with the expert riders and showed the level that the ama guys are really on.

Hey Mark! Sounds like you and Gunny had a great time and thanks for sharing it with us...I'm jealous! So what was the comparison between the riders in the expert group and the AMA Pro? I assume there was a big difference?

Flo- it was a huge difference. i was really surprised at the gap. he waited for everyone to go and gave them some time off he went and he was catching and passing everyone.

the difference is massive and at NJMP which is a short track they are running 6 seconds quicker a lap then fastish advanced guys 1.29's v's 1.23's

I've been on track with Jake Holden. He blew away our local track record by almost a second (at the time, just recently someone finally beat it four years later). He was running a CBR1000rr that he had been riding in AMA superbike that year. Bike had stock rotors, calipers, wheels and master cylinder. Engine dynoed at 171hp on race gas (I know, I bought it from him). Slicks were worn to hell and he was pulling wheelies and goofing off all day. Watching the lines and where he braked and used the throttle was just insane. He was generally still a full throttle, when even the fast local guys were on the brakes going in to the corners, then somehow back on the throttle well before anyone else and steering with the rear everywhere. Didn't appear to be pushing at all was the scary thing.

Another experience I had was at the YCRS. Graves was sharing the track with the school. While we were in class, Herrin, Hayes, Aquino and Clarke were turning laps. At one point towards the end of the day we were standing on a particular apex that many were having trouble with. Hayes walked all the way across the track on foot to offer some advice, then said he would tell the boys to pull one of his bikes back out of the semi so he could show us (they had packed up for the day). Goes walking back across the track to the pit area and sure enough, a bike gets brought back out. His out lap (on cold tires) had to have been 20-30 mph faster than any of us went through that corner. Mind you, there were some AMA regulars and a few racers from other countries in this school. Each lap after was faster and smoother. We were standing just a few feet off the apex as he went by each time. The precision was just insane. Hell, the whole day watching them test was crazy, we got to see a lot of it up close and personal. Those guys make crazy speeds seem slow somehow.

yep, apex, apex apex. hitting it properly all the time is 80% of your laptime. and having the right apex of course :D

That's the other thing, their apexes and everyone elses are way different. That was actually probably the most eye opening experience. I have also chased Jason Disalvo around during one of our club racing weekends that they were using to test out the Triumphs. Same thing, different apexes and brake and accelerate at totally different spots. Made way more sense after YCRS why they were doing what they did.

Of course seeing it, understanding why and then doing it myself are totally different things.
