I generally agree with you, in that the age does not necessarily dictate the perceived quality / taste. I love the Mac 12 and 18 as well, but am disgusted by the 15. I prefer the 18 over the 21, but love the 25 although not enough to dictate the exponential jump in price.

I've never had that Mac 60....I probably wouldn't spend that much on it for myself. But for dad's 60th, knowing that he loves whiskey so much he dabbed it on my tongue when I was 3 years old, it's worth it.

Mac are moving away from age driven product, for this very perception that older is better.

Apparently, in the Fine Oak range of 10/12/15/17/18/21/25/30 is slowly being replaced by the 1824 series of Gold/Amber/Sienna/Ruby/M, with increasing colour distinguishing the range, but mainly driven by taste Yet to try them.

I still prefer age on the label as opposed to some arbitrary color description I'll never remember. Hmmmm, was it caramel or burnt umber?

You nailed it! 18 is the sweet spot. 25 is nice by the glass on birthdays but not worth a whole bottle. All of the Laphroaig 30yr variants are in the same boat as the Mac 25 - worth trying but not "investing" in a whole bottle. You get to the point with scotch where it's like "WTF am I doing? I could spend a week in Thailand (including airfare) for what this bottle costs!" Or in the case of the Mac 60 "I could rent a villa at the Four Seasons Bora Bora for two months, or buy this bottle of booze."
