Base Models Finally Rollin In...

Have to disagree with you regarding the forged S rims. They are a significant weight saving over the base wheels that can immediately be felt in acceleration, braking and handling. IMO, it is the biggest reason to get the S over the base.

Agreed.

Exact reason I chose the S.

Exactly - I think we can throw the bs flag on the "dramatic difference" claim

It all depends on who you are including in your "we".

Personally, I disagree with you.

On the street, it doesn't matter. I can feel a difference, but it doesn't really matter. On the track, it does make a difference. I know all things being equal my 675 picked up an average of 3mph more top speed (GPS verified in multiple OEM/BST back-to-back test sessions) simply from installing the BST's (it is definitely noticeable on 600's that are HP limited and can't reach redline in 6th gear with stock gearing).

With lightweight wheels the bike revs faster and turns easier. You basically have more "effective" HP due to the reduction in rotational inertia.

Dropping 3lbs off the bike, not a big deal. Dropping 3lbs of unsprung, rotational mass...especially towards the outer diameter of the wheel...big difference. Even grams matter when it comes to the wheels...hence people going with Ti rotor bolts/sprocket nuts.

Every single review I see online says to buy base and save the money for the Akrapovic exhaust. And I agree.

All depends on what you want to use it for. I don't rely on reviews to make my decisions. On the street, I agree. For racing purposes (in Superstock classes where you can't change the wheels), the S makes more sense. And I will still get the Akra exhaust.

Since the beginning of all Ducati forums the "Base" vs "S" discussion always comes up. No right or wrong answer here.

Different strokes for different folks. Dont settle or you will never truly be happy and always come across trying to justify and defend your purchase when the next thread comes up for whatever reason.:D

I agree completely. I said something similar in another thread. At the end of the day, there is no "right" answer. What matters is being happy.

But the worst thing is to spend this kind of money, then a few months later be like "damn I should have gotten...".

It was a new bike of course and not broken in, also I'm not sure what setting was selected for the wheelie control, that may have had something to do with it. It's fast, but the S1000RR was scary fast

We've discussed it before, it is because of the power delivery and sound. Twins (and V4's, and I-3's and even Crossplane I-4's) always feel slower due to the power delivery. The "screamer" type motors of the ZX10 and BMW always feel faster because of how fast they spin up, the "hit" at higher RPMs and the sound.

But the power/weight ratio and acceleration times (0-60, 0-100, 1/4mi) do not lie.

I never thought I'd try racing my bike, but I'm going to give it a shot. The disappointing part was having to junk the electronic suspension. Its not allowed.

Who do you race with (what org)?

I have never heard of an org not allowing electronics that come from the OEM.

To clarify, I was talking about on the street. Also some were questioning the ~2 lb weight difference per wheel, which is in fact the case. On the track, where 0.01 second could mean winning or losing, every detail matters.

As I'm getting the base , due by the end of May [emoji4][emoji4] I have a carbon Fibre guard and decal kit to fit . Also ordered the Akrapovic slip ons which will be fitted at the first service .
$9 000 more for the S . Yes ok the Ohlins and wheels and headlight is an upgrade . For me with getting Akrapovic I'm already dropping weight and oh OH the sound .. Not long too wait now [emoji106]

Took both toys out today, which one I like better depends on how hot it is ;)
