I was cleaning the bike now all week long, lots of gravel, sand, grease and insects, yuck! :(
Installed new air filter, refilled water and oil. Exchanged lots of bits and pieces. Bike looks now like new. Today I made a first test run: after a couple of minutes warning appears on dashboard "Speed Sensor!". It doesn't matter whether engine is running or not. So I checked cables, removed sensors and cleaned them and reinstalled them. I only found the rear sensor's plug. I have no clue where the front sensor's plug is :(
Any ideas?

Left hand fork bottom

Not the sensor, but it's wiring plug. In the meantime I've found a picture in the workshop manual. Horrible place to locate a plug :(

I guess if one could get aa hold of one that ddoesn'thave bent forks or something that makes them totally unrideable it may be worth it to pick up for a track build?

Absolutely.

Insurance companies are required to return the bike to "like new", using OEM parts and approved shops. And if the repair bill adds up to a certain % of the bike's worth, they will just write it off. Which means that even a minor drop on just one side can potentially "total" a bike because of the cost of the fairings, gas tank and labor charges.

And any frame damage is an instant total, no questions asked. There were hundreds of "totalled" 1098/1198s every year because of the way the rearsets bolted to the frame. Drop the bike and break off that frame tab, and boom...the bike is totalled.

So yeah, you can easily find bikes that have nothing more than cosmetic damage and they will make great track-day bikes. Just remove the busted OEM bodywork, throw on some race bodywork and go with it.

Mission accomplished :)
Had to replace the front speed sensor and one connector to the front fork.
Bike looks like new (thanks to all the OEM parts stowed away in the basement for 2 years) and rides perfectly.

Damn. Lois awesome! So is it going to be a track bike or just a second back up?

Thanks!! That's my new street legal commuter bike. My carbonized Tri becomes now a real track bike. Currently I am replacing the it's OEM subframe with CF. Next step will be some electronics and removal of the head light.

Okay mordor, I'm keeping you posted :)
Yesterday was phantastic weather, so I took off together with my GF and a colleague to the "Schwarzwald". 1 SL, 1 red 1199S and a M1200S, it was great. When we came back home we were so tired that I didn't touch the new Pani. Just went to bed.

Today I started to take the new babe apart, replaced some broken parts and generally checked it's condition.

1) The previous owner seemed to be a bit of a pig. The bike is dirty everywhere. Luckly I like cleaning and I couldn't find any corrosion except for one screw which is not OEM.

2) Never had one of those "new" heat shields in my hand. When a removed the one installed on that bike I had to realise it's ..... See attached pictures. I will install the Ilmberger ceramic shield I have lying around.

3) The exhaust shields are completely loose. And the 4 screws holding them are rusty. I replace them with new screws and Ilmberger shields, also left from my Tri before I switched her to full Ti Akra.

4) Obviously some tech forgot to reinstall the engine breather hose clamp after some servicing. Always good to check a newly purchased good :)

What's really cool is that the engine is completely dry, no leakage anywhere.

Gecko,
In your 4th picture the two brackets that the OEM exhaust holds onto has the 4 screws. I found these to be loose when I swapped out my OEM for akra. I think it is a common problem but one hard to see.

So warning for Panigale owners, perhaps every year at least or less check these screws so your exhaust does not fall off.

I bought a crash Pani with 2400 miles on it. I also had the speed sensor issue. Its now clocked 5200 miles and that includes 3 days at Jerez. Cant fault it
