carbon electronics trays on 1299 - anyone install any yet?

as carbonization nears completion, I just ordered these rather big pieces that seem to be omitted on a lot of bikes that have a lot of carbon:

Ducati Panigale 899 1199 1299 100 Carbon Fibre ECU Electrical Covers Corse | eBay

I had ordered carbon brake/clutch reservoir holders from them before, and they were very nicely made, but too light and thin to hold the reservoirs without vibrating like crazy.

But in this application, it may not be the worst thing in the world to be thin and light.

I'm hoping mightily that these, being designed for the 1199, will fit on my 1299. I guess I'll find out soon enough :p

they should work - parts fiche lists the part number for both the 1199 and 1299 as the same.

why, oh why do I not check these things BEFORE I send money? lol

Definitely interested in the install notes on this one. I see that much electrical work in one job and it immediately sets me back.

I've been staring at the parts fiche as well as the actual tray. It looks like it's more tedious than anything difficult. I see *three* main screws holding the tray in, and then there's unplugging all the various electronics and then remounting them.

The upside is that by taking the trays off, I will be able to access the area under the airbox, where I can plug off the charcoal canister breather hoses directly at the throttle intake, and either plug the secondary air injector at the valve, or remove the valve entirely and plug the airbox, if the bike doesn't throw a code with the valve unplugged.

I was looking at the same one on eBay. Let us know how it goes

one side down, one to go. I am happy that the matte finish is the same slightly glossy matte that's on my Ducati Performance carbon parts, so it's a match.

These were half the price of some I've seen for sale. While the carbon quality itself is good, they don't weigh much less - 2oz per side. Also, one will need a set of files and sandpaper handy to adjust some fitment - in particular, one tab for a fairing screw needed to be about 2.8mm thick, but was 3.7mm, so the speed nut wouldn't slide over. It was also too long, so more filing was needed. Fortunately, with the right abrasives, carbon fiber shapes very quickly.

Keeping track of the electronic components proved to be easier than it looks.

Now onwards to the other side....

the left side....well.

easier to take apart in a sense. need to be careful as both MAP sensors are there. The main trunk of the bike's wiring harness passes through this tray, meaning that in order to remove the tray, you've got to unplug everything in the tail. Which means lifting the tank. No big deal, until I got the massive plug for the "Ducati BBS" unit out. It won't come out unless you lift the rear subframe.

I have a particular hatred for the left bottom subframe bolt. It takes me as long to get that one bolt as it does for me to do the tank and the rest of the subframe combined. Putting it back in, I've got a technique, but getting that thing out....if anyone has a surefire trick for it (I use flashlights, swivel joints, you name it) do let me know!

This side needed both fairing tabs to be filed and sanded down, and it's just barely too thick for the speed clips for the ignition coil - if you press the tab from the rear as you screw from the front, it'll catch. Otherwise it won't. So had I known that I'd have sanded a half millimeter off those tabs as well.

Was it worth it? Well, it does look very nice, and when I put in the front side pieces, it'll all tie in together with the front key guard.

There is absolutely no performance advantage with these - 4oz weight saved (although add that with my carbon sidestand's 4oz, why, that's half a pound!). But for someone with a serious and completely irrational carbon addiction, they do satisfy.

How do the fairings fit into the new CF pieces? That would be my main concern.

I wouldn't call the fitment OEM quality, but I think it's not the easiest thing to do with carbon fiber; my Ducati Performance pieces aren't 100% perfect, not to the level you can get with plastic.

That's out of the box of course. With some patience, some sandpaper and fine files, pretty much any carbon piece can be made to fit perfectly.

I had to modify the screw tabs, and might take a couple millimeters off here and there to get it dead perfect, but as you can see, the only person who'd really know that anything is slightly off is me - or a very keen sighted, even worse OCD person than myself :p

this eBay vendor (carbonfiberfever) has sent me the front side covers. I'm going to call it a day at that point. There are no 1299-specific carbon tail pieces that I've found, and I'd have to do the rear cylinder covers in carbon, to get motivated to do the rear reservoir holder/line protector carbon piece as well.

The very important thing to remember is that these are lost costs. I've learned that you do NOT recoup any of these upgrades upon resale. So....

1. If I sell the bike, the carbon comes off and the plastic goes back on
2. This may be the last twin-cylinder Ducati superbike. If that's the case, I'll keep it forever, and then any modifications are worth it.
3. It's cheaper than crack cocaine and gives me a better high.

Thanks for the write, without a doubt they add some serious bling and tastiness, for us OCD guys..

I already mentioned some required sanding and filing to get the clip nuts mounted. Today I did a very small amount of filing for the fairing tabs and now it sits perfectly. Cheap (these cost half as much as the premium article) doesn't necessarily mean cheap carbon or layup - there's a fair bit of labor to fine-tune a piece to make it a perfect fit. Seeing as I was willing to do that, and that these pieces are 100% carbon (no fiberglass) not to mention finished well, I think I made out ahead.
