Permanent move to Dunlop is official. Thanks for the link Phil. Developed in Al made in Buffalo.

Well I just switched to them because of availability here. I personally don't think anything will change.
I work in, and have worked around the oil &gas, petrochemical industry for 25 years.

Many companies like this that aren't as mature as lets say Exxon mobile are trying to expand into "Down Stream" markets. Doing this does two things. One it allows them greater and instant market share and access. Two, it allows them to Double dip, meaning they make money on both ends of the business, both crude and refined products, also guaranteeing a customer for their products.

There is also a technology transfer aspect...in the world of Chemical engineering, one of the most complicated things to make is tires.

Pirelli gets a set market price for the materials and cheap labor.

I can't imagine that's good long term. They want higher margins from luxury goods but... generally... their purchases iof these companies mmediately de-value said goods.

I'm officially switching to Dunlop now.

Maybe I should hang on to the Supercorsa's I just bought so I can sell them in a year as "the last set not made in china" and ask 4 times what I paid for them!! lol.

I wouldn't worry honestly. No sense buying a premium brand with the intent of dumbing it down. Pirelli gets access to materials and labor at cheap prices, Chinese get access to technology and patents that would take longer to develop on their own. Audi didn't kill Ducati.

Audi isn't a Chinese brand/company though. Audi is German. German companies are known for QC and Great worksmanship/materials etc. Chinese are not.

This was once true..but similar to how the Koreans started off making ...... stuff and now have some of the best tech available... I do firmly believe China will end up in the same place..Chinese products are not necessarily garbage even today.... But I am still sticking with Dunlop either way.... Price and wet grip leads me there...But China is moving massively in the right direction....

I take it you have never owned a German car?:D
German reliability, the greatest myth.....

They aren't moving the manufacturing facilities. And even if they were, I still wouldn't be worried. The CE2 rated Dainese leathers you were posting the other day are made in Pakistan. It's all about the company control over the QC process.

"Moving in the Right direction" that's the point I feel. I want at/on the point not getting there when it involves the only contact I have on a road or track really.

Shaka I hear ya. They are better, not the best, but in the article the only person staying is the current president. All the products will move to China as well. And yes Company Control, but when the control company that made then superior and reliable is now gone that's a huge question mark. But American components, Russian components all made in Taiwan. Just not thrilled with the idea or thought that this will be my razor on the street. I did own 2 bmw's while stationed in Germany and they are the only cars I've ever owned to not leave me stranded or break down. 4.5 years and only service and tires. Both bought used.

I think we are reading different articles. The one linked says there is in fact, quite a bit of Italian ownership remaining. Also a quick google said keeping quite a few other key people and nothing about production moving to China. Outside of the industrial tire, and heavy truck production, which has little value on the overall deal.

Even still, not worried about it. The Chinese can build anything they want to whatever standard they want. Now if the price of Pirelli's suddenly drops in half, then I would be worried as they obviously cut corners somewhere.

Thats true. Just mentioning it devalues the brand. Until china changes that stereotype of "cheap", Pirelli will probably try to keep the news of a having a Chinese majority shareholder quiet.

China really is taking over the world

Way too early to draw any conclusions on that. And besides, these pretty much make it a moot point for me anyway... ;)

Very disturbing, the rule of thumb is if your going to buy Chinese ...., buy the cheapest Chinese ...., because it's all ..... And I will never knowingly put any Chinese stuff on my Ducati.
