clutch slipping

12' 1199 13k odo/second owner so I have to assume OEM original clutch.

Started slipping last night after about a healthy 45min ride. Fluid change looked past due so I made that my mission.

Just took it for a ride after flushing clutch and it felt excellent, early engagement via lever. No slipping even under heavy throttle on longer gears.

Towards the end of my ride it started slipping.

By the time I got home it barely engaged at the end of the lever throw.

Has anyone else experienced a clutch failure? it seems as though these slippers are supposed to be quite tough and im finding little to no related threads on the issue which has me wondering..

Do I need a new clutch assembly? Could I have bled the system poorly? Is this a potential slave cylinder issue?

In addition, the slippage began the same day I put new levers on the bike. However, I highly doubt that the plunger is the issue as I used the entire OEM pin+plunger assembly in the CRG lever as it fit perfectly.


in the event I have to overhaul the clutch myself, is there a more generic tool to undo the fixing nut?

as specified by the manual, PN# 88713.3211 is 300$......

suggestions on where to buy a new clutch assembly? do I need a new basket as well?

Old fluid even new fluid left in a previously opened container, often contains water which expands when riding making the clutch slip.

Rule this out first, before measuring thickness of clutch plates.

Still slips after system flush w/ brand new DOT 4. is it possible that there is still a slight amount of the old fluid causing this issue? I put at least 3 reservoir fills worth of new fluid into the system....

You answered this yourself, if there is not enough free play the swelling of fluid presses in the clutch.

Selling occurs with good fluid, mine did what you described when changing lever and not leaving enough free play.

I was up all night trying to figure out what the issue was. so as a last ditch effort i basically bottomed out the plunger pin. it doesn't feel like the lever depresses the master far enough but i just took it for a ride and it didn't slip. I hope that was the issue.

NP did it myself on my 848. been there. Your welcome

It shouldn't be a issue, my 04 r1 lasted over 60K kms before needing replacing.
