Coolant leak

Ducati Forum

Help Support Ducati Forum:

Update, I traced stain back to the weephole so far. Its tiny leak after ride dribbling down to the threaded dowel screw. Still cant tell though if its coming from squirter above or the weephole to be sure. It will have to get much worse to tell. 440 miles on bike, haha. MV has over 6K miles and no issues whatsoever. Boy this sucks.

Have the weep hole leaking issue on my 1299S since new. Some drops of coolant every ride coming out of the weep hole (standing on side stand after ride). I was able to see it coming out that hole several times. Sometimes it was enough to flew down on the alternator cover. Got two new water pumps on warranty, but after 200-300 km it always started leaking again. My dealer complaint again vs Ducati, but no info what they want to do.

I think the quality of the water pump shaft seal is really poor...

"I think the quality of the water pump shaft seal is really poor... "
I tend to suspect the same....

Interesting observation. On my latest ride, it did not weep this time. I did not ride super hard but gave a it a good city heat cycle of stop go and wait. No leak this round. I will simply have to keep an eye on it. To be fair, the bike has sat most of the year, with only an occasional ride every third week or so. Still, this is so weird.

Pump seal, squirter, the whole lot looks to be seeping now, haha. I can't tell where its coming from any more on my 15 because its comes from several places depending on how it feels, haha.....I guess I ride till I get stranded.

I'm guessing this is the culprit. Its on page 111/148 of the parts manual.

55320121A SQUIRTER UNIT $169.86

I had brought my bike to the dealer when I noticed the leak. They checked it out, said they didn't notice any more leaking and its been dry since then.

Is there a service bulletin or anything on it?

Looks like I'm up for one of these aswell dried coolant everywhere out of the unit and hoses.

As ducati hasn't revised this should I disassemble the new thermostat and place a smear of gasket sealer wear the o ring is?

Personally I wouldn't use sealant where an O-ring is. You can buy replacement O-rings easily enough from a dealer. Just ensure the groove it sits in is perfectly clean and the mating surface on the engine as well. Above all, as it is a plastic assembly, do NOT overtighten the retaining bolts as you can distort the squirter sufficiently enough to cause another leak. I think the workshop manual states 10Nm for the three mounting bolts. The O-ring is a use it once affair. Once you remove the squirter you must replace it.

Looks like I might have been bitten by the coolant leak demon. Sucks b/c its 3 months out of warranty.

I'm hoping it's a loose hose, but I think its the squirter. Either way a lot of digging thru plastic to fix it.

SNAP!!! Just out of warranty by a few months.....

Mine was a crack in the thermostat housing. They repaired it, I took the bike out and I started to see a few more drips. Went back to the dealers and it had stopped. Whether or not it had to get up to temperature or not to 'seat in' or it was laying in the fairings who knows, but no more leak.

If you have a good dealership they may chase it to be repaired under warranty or source the part cheaply.

Cos the thermostat housing ain't cheap 240 aud

And c+nt of a job to replace and shouldn't be made of plastic with a dodgy o ring to seal.

You can have a quick visual of the thermostat without taking any fairings off.

I have been suffering from an intermittent coolant leak see my other thread I then received this from the dealer as my 2 year warranty is about to die

I had that little weeping hole as well, but my squirter has stuff coming out now. Been in the shop a week now.... I just need the squirter/hoses area fixed and I will be happy again.
Thank goodness I have the extended warranty covering cooling and engine and electronics!

In your first image it looks as though the dealer has fitted a jubilee clip that is too large judging by the amount of banding that's been wound through. That or its been way overtightened. Wrenching on these will lead to cracking of the plastic thermostat housing. The manual says 2Nm. In reality you only really need to nip them just enough to compress the hose itself. Personally I think had the thermostat housing design in terms of how it mounts to the engine (currently relies on a single o-ring compressed by three bolts) been improved and the housing itself been made of aluminium, the failures would have been lessened. This is obviously an aside to all the other well documented problems surrounding the water pump weep hole.

Thats what I reckon too, the thermostat housing should be ali/metal and the water pump and oil pump gears should be metal also.

Good information Top. I had problems the last trackdays this year with a fair amount of leaking. Each morning i was greeted by a little pool under the engine.
I located it to the lower hose clamp, generator side. It was dripping under the clamp. I did tighten it on the last day tracking and it seemed to stop.
Now i have loosen the hose and taken a look and it seems ok,no cracks on house/housing.
So should i just screw it back or replace the entire thing with a thermostat block off. I have seen they make them in aluminium and do i really need the thermostat? (Only track) Cant make up my mind..

Hi guys, new user here on the forums. This 1199 is my second Ducati and noticed in storage that I'm leaking a bit of coolant. Tracked it down and its seeping out of the horizontal head gasket. Everything else seems fine as I have checked the hoses and clamps. It's not coming from the weep hole in between the cylinders, but it looks like some time in the past it must of.

Anyone else hear of head gasket failures on the 1199? I'm a bit concerned if I replce the head gasket I might be chasing more issues. Bike has 3700 miles and I have put 1500 miles on it with smoke on start up being the only issue. Thanks for any input.
