Dash linked to key? ECU?

If someone needs to replace their dash, can they buy a used dash only, and will it work with no error codes?

In other words, is a used dash linked to the key, immobilizer, ECU, or BBS?
 
Which components are programmed to dash? Please be specific.

And if the programmed components don't see each other, will the bike work but with error on dash? Or will bike not run?
 
If you can get a hold of or buy an OBDStar iScan tablet it will program the dash for you. Or you have to take it to the dealer. Everything is programmed to talk to each other, even the ABS module.
