Hate it. Not very pleasing to my eye and looks like an afterthought...cause it is.

Do you really think anything Akrapovic and Ducati Corse develop in partnership is an afterthought? Like Akrapovic would really just throw something on a factory bike without some data to back it up?

This isn't really about ultimate power, it's HOW+WHERE the power is delivered. Many hours testing in the dyno cell and on track.

All true but they did say in an iterview that more HP at the top end was a priority.

I just like how it (apparently) simplifies the pipe routing. My biggest question: they've got a flapper valve controlling flow to the left-hand can. I wonder just how complex the algorithm is for opening that. That's when things get stupid expensive - programming and optimising a map for something as simple as one butterfly valve in the exhaust. Tens of thousands of dollars?

You can see the Panigale R is much faster. At PI, they couldnt pass the Kawi, even in the draft. Now, Chaz is blowing past the Kawi. Chaz for the double and we need other riders to get in front of Rea.

the sight of that brought tears of joy to my eyes. Aragon has a very, very long back straight, and the Ducati had at least equal, if not a little more pace, than the Kawasakis. Chaz was on ....... fire; his pace through the corners was insane, no matter what line he chose to take.

If Chaz doesn't take the double, there will be quite a few people who will be shocked.

He was passing in places I didnt think possible. He jut put the bike where he wanted it to go and it was rock solid. So much for the demise of the Panigale. Lets hope he can continue this for the rest of the season. Gigi waving his magic wand......

It was like watching a different bike. Hopefully it gives the Kawi a run for it's money the rest of the season.

I also wonder how much of this development will go into the next iteration of the new Panigale. Not saying it should be replaced, but in an effort to cut down on the developments timeline to make it competitive out the box.

You will notice when Chaz was passing Sykes and Rea how flick able the Panigale is and the lines Chaz could take this has always been a high point for the Panigale and one of the reasons the bike looks a little more unsettled than the Zx 10 .
Now with the new found grunt the bike seems very competitive .

If it does well it's going on the panigale replacement for sure
!
You can almost imagine a beta versions looking very cool and similar to tho original 916 undertail configuration

How did Ducati get around the rules, or did WSBK change them?

The rules (at least used to) state the exhaust must remain in the OEM position. That is back when the Gixxers had those dual exhausts, they had them in WSBK also. There were many aftermarket systems that dumped the additional can and made them single, but they werent allowed to do it in WSBK.

I was wondering the same thing because EBR's race system is an underbelly design, but they had to use a high mount style exhaust because of the OEM design.

thats a really good question I had to look it up:
2.4.8.18 Exhaust system
a) Exhaust pipes, catalytic converters and silencers may be altered or
replaced from those fitted to the homologated motorcycle. Catalytic
converters may be removed.
b) The number of the final exhaust silencer(s) must remain as homologated.
The silencer(s) must be on the same side(s) as on the homologated
model.
c) For safety reasons, the exposed edge(s) of the exhaust pipe(s) outlet(s)
must be rounded to avoid any sharp edges.
d) Wrapping of exhaust systems is not allowed except in the area of the
rider’s foot or an area in contact with the fairing for protection from
heat.
e) The noise limit for Superbikes will be 115 dB/A (with a 3 dB/A tolerance
after the race only).
FIM 2017 Proposals: 107 dB

Its almost like the single exhaust was breaking the rules

The silencers must remain in the same oem position, which they are. Totally legal.

Portimao WSBK: Ducati debut new exhaust - Bikesport News

Aruba Ducati riders Chaz Davies and Davide Giugliano debuted a new Akrapovic exhaust in the second World Superbike free practice at Portimao this afternoon and it propelled the pair to the top of the speed list.

Davies was clocked at 308.6kph on the Portugese track’s start/finish straight on his way to the fourth fastest lap of the day an advantage of almost three kilometres per hour over the pack.

World Superbike technical director Scott Smart explained the new system to bikesportnews.com at Portimao: “It’s a new concept for Ducati and results in one exhaust outlet high on the right-hand side, so it is more like the megaphone arrangement of MotoGP bikes.

“It it still legal, the silencers are in the same place, one on each side and hopefully gives them a little bit of extra performance.”
