? Extra ring added to pistons ?

I had plumes of white smoke after start up that tapered off as the motor got up to temp. After about 50 miles it lessened and after about 100 miles it's essentially gone. I've never had black or discolored smoke which is what I would expect if burning oil. Truthfully, it had the appearance and odor of steam. Maybe one of you mechanics out there can comment, could it be part condensation burning off at start up?

Thanks Gunny for clear up my confusion. I might have a great deal on a 2012 tri but was unsure if I should attempt getting it or going for a 2013 "S" with improved rings. If I can get the deal I think I won't feel so bad knowing that it isn't a drastic change to the bike that could turn out to be a bad engine because of bad rings.

Thanks again Gunny!!!

You should see mine smoke, 1,600mls in and it still fills the street when you start it up and ride for at least the first ten minutes. It drinks oil. Almost the same level as the Desmo does.

If I can find time to post the video on my iphone I will - that will stop all the "it's not a big deal" commentary from people who don't have the issue!

5 k and change on the clock on my early 12 base and still smoke when it 1st starts. like chammtb above, mine likes to consume as well. if they aren't going to admit the issue, sure would like an easier way to view the sight glass at least.

Per Gunny's contact I picked up my bike and road it hard for the first 50 miles (let it heat cycle every 10 miles) - after 150 no smoke

Smoking 1199

I think there is a more serious design problem with the new engine. With such large pistons the combustion is difficult to keep even. The pistons then twist a little in the bore as the compression is uneven and the piston skirt wears the barrel liner unevenly. Oil bypasses the piston and hey presto it smokes a bit and finally fails. Be prepared for warranty arguments...
Re designed barrels, spark plug locations and fuel injection on it's way me thinks.
Hey I am not an engineer but someone out there is?

Hum, think Ducati have a few engineers with experience in these things...

Nice doom and gloom first post by the way

If your bike still smokes after few hundreds, does that mean the bike wasn't burn in correctly, the seal aren't set as they should. Maybe it's more apparent in colder climates.

Mine stopped smoking at start up around the 100 mile mark. Never seen smoke since.
