First mods on the R

Ducati Forum

Help Support Ducati Forum:

I do have the clear tank protector which I had since my old S. Bought 2 way back when and installed one on the S, failing miserably. The adhesive is not good enough to hold the clear protector.

For the R, I used the second clear one using the wet application method... (a bit of purell to help slide and to remove air bubbles. Worked out pretty good except the rigidness of the protector made the edges lift up the next day. I heated the protector enough to make it pliable but started lifting up regardless..

I'll post some pics tomorrow when it's bright.

Is that a RAM mount? How does it attach to the steering head nut?

No it's the Adaptiv D-01-16 AdaptivMount Type D Sport Bike Mount. I bought mine at Amazon after seeing it on a bike of a forum member.
The original steering head nut is removed and replaced with the one that is part of the mount. The mechanic was impressed with the quality of the mount and it took him less than 1/2 hour to do the install.

Here are some clear pics.

Please no comments on the crappy install I did. I'm not sure you can get the edges of the pad to stay down on a curved surface.

Removed the ugly insect antennas and installed the radar detector:

Installed the Gilles footpegs...thanks to TricoloreSF for posting;) love 'em!

All I got to do now is make up my mind which tail tidy to get :D

The first edition tank protector sucks, it came off in corners, got it replaced by the 2014 edition protector by Ducati under warrenty. Second edition looks way better and it doesn't loosen in corners. It sticks to the tank as it should.

Hi Zaster...R looks great!! But honestly in my opinion...you should have purchased the clear DP tank pad to show off the bare Brushed Aluminum tank portion of your "R".

Also by using clear...it doesnt disrupt the design... my 2cents. :)

agreed! but I have a base model so i'll go ahead and shut up now...

As an FYI to the OP and everyone else, Ducati quietly started making a new revision of the tank protector (link below) I assume because many people had issues with the original style that kept pealing at the corners or cracking. However, Ducati is still selling the original design that the OP went for.

New design

Original version now on sale cuz it's faulty...

I had the same issue with the first edition coming adrift. I now have a matt cf protector that covers the back of the tank......much better!!!

Okay, so as promised.....

The protector arrived, packaged well, no issues. Inside the box were fairly straightforward instructions and at least 4 alcohol based wipes for surface prep.

The wipes worked fine with no other issues or marking/residues on paintwork etc. I used a heat gun to thoroughly warm the protector first (although I'm sure a hair dryer would work fine) and offered the parts up first before removing the backing. Once in the right shape I then cooled the parts under a cold tap to get the part to almost hold the profile (see picture) which helped a little, then dryed etc.

Once the main middle was in place I personally went for using the lines on the protector for aligning the additional edge pieces.

A little further heat was used in getting the thing fully stuck and bedded down, again no issues. Great product, perfect for the R. However, this is purely for protection of the paint work and offers no real advantage as a tank grip.

My only gripe is that it could have been tailored for the R and the protector profile could of been matched to the lines of the paint work a bit better and possibly a brushed aluminium (then you wouldn't get the lines and bubbles with the clear version) version instead of the silver carbon fibre effect maybe?
