Hey dudes,

Just joined this forum to learn more about owners experiences with 1199.
I just sold my '09. R1 and I'm torn between S1000RR and a Panigale maybe even 899. I wanted a Ducati ever since i first saw 916 in '93. (I was 15) and now I can afford one too.
I tried and S1000RR on the street and the track and it's pretty damn perfect. From what I hear everywhere Panigale is not better in any department except that awesome raw feeling when you're riding it, which means a lot but I'm not sure is it enough. And then the heat issues, crap paint blah blah. Should one spend 20K euros and then think about ceramic coating, carbon heat protection etc.
WTF were they thinking when they were making it!!!

PS. Yes, I need someone to tell me it's ....... awesome and that I should STFU and buy one :D

Cheers

Test ride one, you'll probably not leave without buying it.

No "probably" to it.

Just a 5-minute ride listening to a 1199 motor turning @ 7k and you'll realize what a finely-made sewing machine the S1000R is - and that you really don't want to be riding a German sewing machine, no matter how finely it's made. :)

Get the Duc. Go with your heart, not your head.

i was in the exact same position as you man. i test rode the Duc and literally fell in love. if you're anything like me, or all of us it seems, there just nothing that can touch the feeling of riding this thing. ive put 8k miles on mine in 5 months here in FLA and not ONE single problem other than a few bolts here and there to tighten up. and i torture my bike....poor thing...and ive left a few guys on s1000rr's btw...from 70-186 and i let them get the jump. with 2 identical riders and shifting on point the s1000rr has the straight line/HP advantage but not until the very top of the RPM range. this bike has so much character and its just a blast to ride. plus honestly, you just feel like the man everywhere you go lmao...yes im that guy. the sound...its just amazing..

Dont buy it

I wouldnt buy it if you mainly ride on the steet and want comfort and slow speed happiness. It isn't for that. It is full of awesome technology and beauty that FAR surpass's the hit in the face with the ugly stick, sterile, sounds japanese BMW, I have a pnaigale 1199s and rsv4 factory aprc sbk se. I also have several other bikes and have owned pretty much every jap 1000 inline for and vtwin except Honda;s due to a hatred of the company and it's politics. Nothing will be any better on the Ducati than the BMW. If you just want one bike and are going to be riding on the street, the BMW will be more comfortable and usable but be prepared to just blend into the masses with it. The Ducati can be enjoyed sitting still and only when riding at the track will you discover it's true potential. It is incredibly fast past 7K rpms and will rocket launch you into corners so fast you will be buying stock in Frit of the Loom so be prepared.

i'll tell you what, due to its awesomeness...i dont mind that its slightly more uncomfortable than the other bikes. that said, maybe its because i have pretty long arms and im an athletic 26 year old MMA fighter, so the terrible posture doesnt bother me as much as it may to some people, but even slower riding doesnt bother me. its hot, rides pretty rough, seat is hard, and i wouldnt trade it for anything lol...nothing. and as said above, when that thing hits about 7500 RPM get ready because its like an on/off switch for the front wheel to go sky high. more than any other bike ive ever ridden.

azimmerlyjr - now I know why you love the Pani, you're addicted to pain!

haha thats funny Jeff. i put myself through a lot of pain and hard work thats for sure...the Pani is my release man. its not gonna be worth .... when im done with it and its got 100000 miles on it tho hahaha

I guess I’ll need to try it. I’ve been talking about buying a Ducati for years now. Most of my friend are getting so sick of it that they wish i would buy one and shut up about it.
I can deal with uncomfortable and my R1 was hot enough that riding in light pants around town in the summer was very uncomfortable. All of them are uncomfortably hot in the summer. I’m wondering how bad is it on the Panigale when everyone it bitching about it.
Another thing is that power band, exactly what I never liked about in line 4 engines except Yamaha’s big bang ( brilliant).
BTW, I always have one bike and use it for everything from daily commutes, backroad blasts to track days.
I guess I’ll find out all about it first hand in two weeks.

its a good amount hotter thats for sure. but like you said they are all bad. it just is what it is. i got my Pani becuase it was always a childhood dream of mine. always been addicted to the top end pull and high revs of the other bikes though so when the pani came out and made all that power up top compared to the 1098 and 1198 i just had to get one. couldnt be more pleased.

I also had a 2009 Crossplane R1. That doesn't even count as "hot" compared to a Panigale. If you ride in traffic in hot summer weather, it literally can cause burns on your skin if you wear less than leathers, search on this forum and there is a disgusting thread where people were posting pictures of the heat rashes on their legs. It definitely is the hottest-feeling bike I have ever owned.

Regarding the powerband, the Panigale is more peaky than the Crossplane R1 engine, but it doesn't have the super-high revs (I had my R1 ECU reflashed with the 14,500 RPM redline). So it can feel like it has a short powerband as it really has a noticeable jump in power from above 7,500 rpm and screams towards 11,500 rpm. However, during that space it makes 40 more horsepower at the wheel than my R1 did with a full Graves exhaust, ECU reflash and Bazzaz Z-Fi with custom tune. And the Panigale weighs about 52 pounds less than a stock R1. I had Ohlins FGRT forks, TTX Mk2 shock, steering damper and more on my R1 and it isn't even close to what the Panigale is in handling and shock-and-awe when riding it in anger.

As was said, you want "easy" get the S1000RR/HP4. You want passione, excitement, and the feeling like you've accomplished something after riding it, then there is only one choice.

However, I do miss the sound of my Crossplane on the high banks of Daytona:

The BMW is much better all round.
You would be well served to get one over the DUCATI.

Reading through the forum and it really doesn't help.
Some hate it, some love it, some put up with it.

S1000RR is just so damn perfect....except for the first year engines that were blowing up as if they were going out of fashion.

I will buy a Tuono. :D
