So i helped my buddy change his oil on his 1199 this weekend. After inspecting the used oil we found some fragments in the drained oil. Any idea what this is, its not metal. I'm thinking clutch but not quite sure.

I'd like to say it's from a friction plate, but honestly not sure from your photo. Compare it to that shown below.

i had similar parts in the oil from my 1199, i understand that these small plastic parts are part of the generator and its not an area of concern.... or at least that's what my dealer told me ..

i have ran the bike on track a few times since and no reported issues etc

From memory years ago some guys had small pieces of plastic come out on oil drain and this was traced back to the water pump gear wheel which is made of plastic in early 1199. Perhaps Ducati changed it later. If it is plastic and not metal then perhaps you are okay. You could try doing forum searches. But there was definitely threads about it. Just a thought.

i thought mine was water pump teeth, but after closer inspection and water pump teeth inspection there was no visible damage.
the early 1199 motors had some kind of installation plastic parts not fitted to the later models and these small parts can become separated

Personally, I think that if you drain the oil and parts come out, commonsense should tell you that something's not right. A closer look is required.

Agree
If it is water pump gears, it takes very few km before it stops working, in my case less than 200 km.

I have those exact little pieces from both my bikes. Race and street. They are little tabs that are apart of the assembly process. Zero harm to the motor. They usually appear after a 1st oil change. Or if the bike was gently ridden on the first cycle or service they tend to appear after the bike is ridden in a much more aggressive manner.

Hears an idea ...........ask Ducati , send them the pics they may know more than us.

If that's what came out when the oil was changed, wouldn't you be concerned that there may be additional debris left inside? Debris of that size obviously won't make it past the mesh filter, but it should be of concern nevertheless. Imagine leaning into a right-hander, the oil level in the crankcase spills into the bottom of the clutch housing carrying the suspended debris with it, and the rotating clutch assembly picks up the debris and spits it into the gearing. Perhaps not likely, but absolutely possible.

Doesn't concern me considering the high number of other people finding the same thing. If it aint broke don't fix it!!
