I was wondering what everyone recommends for holding the front axle in position on the 1299 while the axle nut is torqued?

The right side of the axle has two slots that apparently engage pins in some kind of spanner tool.

The work around on my 959, I just torque the right side pinch bolts on the lower fork leg to hold the axle stationary while I torque the axle nut.

Same setup is on my RSV4, it must be an Italian thing...

I have a tool that is basically a tube with two pins that slot into the axle, but never use it, have been doing the same thing as you with torquing the pinch bolt a bit to keep the axle from rotating.

You shouldn’t need a tool. Per the manual

1. Insert axle and finger tighten nut
2. Set brakes and torque caliper bolts
3. Torque pinch bolts
4. Torque axle nut
5. Undo punch bolts and cycle fork
6. Re-torque pinch bolts

Thanks Jag, I'm waaaay up in North Texas near the Oklahoma border, bit of a drive but hoping to move down your way someday. I lived in San Antonio from 2001 to 2007 and really miss the hill country rides....

From the responses, it sounds like I've been doing it right all along, crank down on those pinch bolts and tighten her up...thanks all!
