Everyone likes to make arguments on taxes that favor them. By that same argument - billionaires shouldn't have to pay any more tax than what they "use" in social resources whether that be their fair share as anyone else for schools, community resources or anything else. Let's just flat tax everyone a fixed amount of 15000 per year regardless of what you make .... Sounds great but the realities are far from it.

Lesson learned here for me to make sure your dealer prints only what u paid on the invoice. Not any other number.

Dmv is like a hawk for any larger number. I think they are instructed to exploit any large number.

They're not road taxes per se (at least not in GA). It's a tax on value. Split between county and state. They do go mostly towards roads at county level since counties don't directly share in motor fuel taxes that the state takes in (it's my understanding the local county has some discretion as to what to use their portion on).

A better scheme would be to simply raise the state motor fuel tax. M/C operation would (at least in theory) be cheaper than autos that way.

So then electric vehicles that still use coal and other fossil fuels to charge their cells will get a free ride on the roads we pay for, per se... no thanks.

Also, unemployment and welfare are not interchangeable benefits.

Regardless of the state, it is customary for the purchaser of a vehicle to pay tax on the reduced portion of the purchase price that excludes the items the OP cited. It has nothing to do with earnings or the ability to purchase one vehicle or another.

Electric vehicles get a free ride only if you labor under the misconception that roads are paid for entirely with fuel tax surcharges.
Formula varies from state to state. In GA, fuel tax is only about 60% GDOT funding (and that's for state/federal highways, not county roads). The rest is from general funds, sales taxes, property taxes, etc. (i.e. whether you have a vehicle or not). City/county roads don't get the benefit of fuel taxes. So gas vehicles already getting a "free ride". Electric vehicles already contributing to roads without paying a penny of fuel tax.

The OP's tax in question isn't sales tax, it's vehicle registration. And that's based on market value - not sale price.

Im perfectly ok with paying tax on the correct amount . Them taking extra and shafting me is ridiculous.

You did not pay that much more extra.

Here they tax you on everything including prep and delivery.

That put you at 19.6 roughly are you ticked over such a small amount?

Or like the rest of us, you dont like any tax?

Yep, be lucky your not here. They get you coming and going.

DMV gets me for almost a hundred a month in fees, with multiple vehicles.

They taxed my on what wasnt paid.

Yeah its a hundred bucks. Big deal.

Its a big deal to me. I aint rich. I could have used it toward the service. I wish i ate paper and crapped money but i dont.

If someone took a hundred bucks out of your pocket and said this is mine u wouldnt like it right?

They taxed you on fair market value. Per GA Dept of Rev website:

"For a new motor vehicle, the fair market value is the greater of the retail selling price (or in the case of a lease, the agreed upon value) or the value listed in the state motor vehicle assessment manual. "

You know you can appeal if you think they erred. Per same site:

"Yes, the value can be appealed in the same manner as values for ad valorem tax purposes are appealed. The appeal takes place at the county level. "

You bought it in FL. Did dealer charge you GA sales tax? I bought a 748 from Howard at Action Sport Cycle in Ft. Lauderdale in '97 and paid no sales tax. Until a year later when I got a note from GA Dept of Revenue saying that I owed 'em 3% of sale price (which I then paid).
Just warning you if FL dealer didn't charge GA sales tax, you'll probably get a letter at some point asking for it. (Yes, you can cry more now <passes Kleenex>) :)

I used to buy Ducatis and Husqvarna dirt bikes in SC (UpState Cycle in Greenville) because GA and SC didn't have reciprocal agreements of notification. So no sales tax. No doubt they've corrected that little oversight since then (early/mid 90s).

I cannot believe this thread still keeps going..... I mean really???
