This is best case scenario. Like wind tunnel conditions. Out on track, this aero is compromised by cross winds, other bikes, rotation of the wheels, cornering, etc. Lots of factors at play. But marginal gains. Could even be psychological or just diversionary (makes competitor have to spend resources). Aero on the street is worthless.
No aero hu? So are naked bikes your thing then? I rode a Monster for years, loved it. In the twisties up down hwy1, the 40-70MPH was dreamy but if I had to do an hour on the freeway to get to a ride it was pretty exhausting. I wouldn't dream of doing a track day anywhere near the speeds I'm doing at Mugello with a naked bike. And I'm not breaking 275KPH yet. I would say that would be fking nuts on a naked bike. I found >155MPH at Laguna on an 848-1198 series was way way more difficult to manage the wind on the straight. It was punishing, fun as hell ya, but I didn't know what I know now.
For sure everything in the larger discussion on Aerodynamics is some kind of compromise. Lot's of categories I would say are involved in what that is over the wings & down-force subject.
Each review mirror takes 1 full extra horse power to move through the air at 200kph. So for the race / vs / street discussion, obviously there are compromises to be made in different situations. I've yet to feel there's a shortage of horsepower on the street...or on the track for that matter haha I'm not out winning any races. I guess that's where it becomes interesting as a discussion for me. There's air getting into engines, directing air for cooling parts and riders... It's become highly nuanced, tunable and complex. The "widebody" Panigale is also a compromise. Alone, it's a slower shape, with the rider in a tuck, it's a faster shape. For sure pilots moving all over the place in between other bikes making dirty wind it's messy. But if you can keep the rider from getting exhausted fighting the wind, you're going to win races, or perhaps just have more fun out on a ride? So far I'll take that wide body Panigale. I've got >1hour to do of highway to do, to get to the twisties in the Alps. I've never had fun on freeways until I got this bike. It's just lovely out in the hard wind. 180, 200kph is just not an issue anymore.
IMHO aerodynamics is definitely in an ugly duckling phase. Parts stuck on all over the place. I just noticed today for the first time "rain deflectors" replace rear tire cooling fins when Viñalas' came off in Valencia FP2.It'll be interesting to see its development.
Anyway, that wide Panigale is wide, but how wide? Still fits in between the cages so it's works.
