It will be interesting to see if Ducati can convert that speed to 45 minutes of racing. I can't wait! I love the start of a new season because the slate is brand new again and last year's results are wiped clean!

I'm wondering if that's why Dovi is only testing with the hard compound on.

So what is it with Captain Unibrow? He seriously upgraded Aprilla's racing as well. I wonder what he does that's so different.

100% speculation of course, but I suspect he just started from a different set of fixed points and designed everything else backward to get there. Sort like the general design advice Furusawa (designer of the M1) was offering Preziosi a few years back. You want your center of mass in a certain narrow range relative to the tire contact patches, which then tells you where you need to locate your countershaft to give proper swingarm angles, etc., and you know where you need the rider's weight to be, which then gives you certain hard points to design around. All the parts designs, from motor to frame to ancillary bits follow where the physics say they should be to get a proper handling chassis, rather than designing say, the engine first as a unit and then wrapping everything else around it.

The bikes were already as fast as anything on track, they just had inherent chassis balance and ergonomic shortcomings that limited them in the corners. I'm of the belief that those issues were more significant than the carbon frameless design, which got all the flack for being the problem. Clearly they didn't move to the front when they abandoned it; the gap to the front remained about the same.

But designing around a set of points that are understood by your competitors will nonetheless result in a similar product to theirs, which is why the GP15 now looks more like an RC213V than a GP14. It's the same reason every motocross bike now looks like a clone of all the rest for the most part, and I think Ducati may have been resisting that in the past (to their detriment). I think the Pani's current showing in SSTK and WSBK has demonstrated the frameless approach is viable and competitive; shame that events conspired to it's abandonment at GP level.

/Speculometer Off ;)

So we think he has the key to these hard points and the panache to make Ducati abandon their stuffy attitude towards improvement.

I'll be startled if Suzuki or Honda don't copy the framless Panigale with a V4 superbike in the near future.

Honda patented a stressed engine, "frameless" chassis design in 2006. Had lower mounting points for the front subframe more like the D16, as opposed to the more minimalist, top-of-cylinder head mounted ones on the later carbon, GP Ducatis and the Panigale. But as with all of them, the only (or I should say main) thing connecting the steering head to the swingarm pivot was the motor.

I think the "hard points" are becoming more and more a point of agreement in GP design circles, and most of the top guys are in line. Not to discount what Dall'Igna brings at all, but I think what it took was not so much panache as getting nowhere after spending a fortune. That and getting bought by VW/Audi, who are not shy about spending whatever it takes to win. Their Lemans endurance racing programs have surely proven that.

It will be interesting to see what happens when they switch to Michelin next season. I bet you see quite a bit of variation the first season if the tires characteristics are markedly different from the Bridgestones.

Can someone with videopass tell me what is the video about? Something new?

Not really...just talks about how the different riders did and felt...and ended with an interview with one of the Repsol team's Chiefs.... Cool short clips of each rider....

Dovizioso: "Stoner dominated, but this Ducati is stronger"

"Casey was flying, but he was to make a difference because the second Desmo he's never been near: us today, however, we are more competitive and strong and GP15 works well"

March 22, 2015 - parma
Professor Andrea Dovizioso is loading. Indeed, in his words, "never been more ready." Smiles, Dovi, perfectly at ease in the role of protagonist announced a Ducati reborn in the World that snaps next week in Qatar. As well as in the role of a teacher for a day. It is her, in fact, one of the faces of #guardaavanti, the social campaign launched by Tim together with Ducati, for the conscious use, indeed, not the use of mobile phones when you are behind the wheel. And so, for a few hours here is Andrea settle down on a stool in front of a few hundred high school students Bertolucci and Primo Levi Parma to talk about road safety. "I was too young, and I know that at that age you try to be one of the coolest. But running, you know how much security is important. At your age you feel strong and invincible, but just a nothing because the consequences are serious. For you or for those meetings on the road "is the message. Accustomed to exceed 300 times on the track, road car driver or motorcycle is Dovizioso? "I've never been one who does stupid things, indeed, those who hate behaves well. We who run in bike on the track we have a greater sensitivity to risk, we know most of the risks that we are running, even if it is not always easy to go slow on the street. " From #guardaavanti to look ahead: in a week is runs in Qatar and after a great winter she said that they have never been more ready than now. "It is the reality. Especially when it touches the bottom. We have to tell the truth, the first year that I did in Ducati, we have hit bottom at the level of results and situations, considering the goals that Ducati has always had and that I've always had. That's been a very, very difficult, and now this situation makes us enjoy, because we have worked and suffered a lot and now, after a job done very well and intelligently, we are to be competitive. Very competitive. So today, finishing the test in Qatar ahead of those that you journalists call the Fantastic Four and ahead of Honda and Yamaha is a situation beyond description. I say this for myself, but also for Dall'Igna, for all engineers who have worked and suffered in recent years, for Domenicali, Ciabatti and the whole team. You already nice to be in this situation, but we are so overloaded that we hope this is just the beginning. "

Presented the new Ducati Desmosedici GP15 for the MotoGP World that snaps in Qatar on 29 March. From left Andrea Iannone and Andrea Dovizioso with ...

We are not yet parties, but there have been whispers means of Rossi, Lorenzo, Marquez ... seems to be back to the times of Stoner, Ducati when victories were explained with the Bridgestone tires, gasoline hidden in the frame ... In short, in a few weeks the Ducati has been back on fear.
"And I believe that today we are more competitive and strong. Then Casey dominated, but it was especially he who made the difference, in fact, the second Ducati he has never been close. It means that the bike was not as competitive. At this time, however, the GP15 is competitive, is a motorcycle regular basis, that works. Now it's up to us to work on the finishing touches to make a difference and win. " You mean you goes in Qatar to win? "No, we go to Qatar to make the podium. In testing we were fast. But I know very well those four opponents, I know that bikes have, how they work in the testing and race weekend. Making the podium will still a very difficult undertaking. " If Dall'Igna managed to make this bike, the merit in any case it is also his and Andrea Iannone you have given some guidance. "A result of this level you can not get to the merits of a one person. A pilot can not succeed if it does not have a team behind you, but the same applies to an engineer, if he has people working under him well and a pilot who directs him in the right direction. There are drivers more sensitive, good and less good, but unless you have behind a structure with people who have some knowledge and understanding to work together, not going anywhere. " Three words to define Dall'Igna. "Mature. Competent and ... (long pause; ed ) determined. " The first thing he said after the first lap at Sepang riding the GP15. "...., the bike runs. And it was the only thing I wanted to hear. " Dovizioso at this moment feels revalued? "I want to answer this question. Because when you defend certain colors that have won a lot, people automatically think that's the winning bike. It's stupid and wrong. I believe to have been underestimated in some years past, when I made good results but I did not win. Ducati, where for so no one could win, doing good results now are revalued. Yes, I have matured, I manage better certain situations, but they are not very different from the past. The truth is, as always in the middle. "

Surely, after being rejected by many drivers in the past, also on the experience of the failure of Rossi, will confirm whether the expectations now this Ducati will gorge to many.
"Yes, but I want to stay here. If I looked around would mean that no I'm making the results I want, instead we have two years ahead along with a good project. The goal is to win, then we'll think about the future. " Iannone what tells the GP15? "He has a different way of talking and describing things. At the end of the concepts are the same, but in different terms. He felt the same feelings, the bike works, certainly can not say that does not go. " The problem with the braking is solved? "No. Because we did not have time to work, but the Qatar do not require this stability such as Malaysia. So at Losail was not a big deal. " He spoke of the Fantastic Four. Where do you put? "I feel that this year can I get in. Marquez has something more and at this time the level is very high, in the past there have never been so many great drivers at the same time. However, Marc, Valentino, Lorenzo and Pedrosa won more than me, so it would be useless to say that I feel to their peers. But I feel that I can do it. " How many races will pass before the Ducati start having to do without the advantages of tires and petrol reserved for Open? "Regardless of what happens, there will condition. We have created a competitive bike, if we take away these benefits will not make us go back."

That would have been a risk worth taking IMHO.

sorry for the google translate, interesting article about the fuel situation:

Must Ducati sacrifice performance in the future?

After the two podium finishes in the season opener in Qatar Ducati lost the first open-privilege: From Austin the four factory Ducati riders were allowed to use only 22 liters of fuel.

The loss of two additional liters was ridiculed before the race weekend in Texas. Supposedly Ducati would anyway never uses more than 22 liters. Both the driver and the team leaders responded calmly.

"My engineers have told me that I need not have worried and want to concentrate on the race weekend," commented factory rider Andrea Iannone before the start of training. And championship leader Valentino Rossi was confident before the race that Ducati will have no problems: "I think it makes no difference whether you use 24 or 22 liters. There is a big difference whether you have 21 or 20 liters available. This one liter makes a huge difference. "

But in the race it was different: Both Andrea Dovizioso and teammate Iannone stranded in the cool down lap. It is still unclear whether the two factory Ducatis to the finish line had the full power or whether the electronics already chose a different mapping. "Dovi" did not seem quite as serene as before the start of the second race weekend of the season.

Dovizioso will make no panic
"I can not say that everything is under control, because we were with the fuel at the limit", the Italians clearly, but who wants to do not panic: "We do not worry because it is normal. We did not like Honda and Yamaha consider how we can finish the race with 20 liters in recent years. That's why our bike is not so economical with the fuel to. But we are not worried for the future. "

The Desmosedici consumed in Austin more than two liters more than the Yamaha M1 and the Honda RC213V liter. For accelerated significantly stronger than the Ducati Rossi's M1 in the higher gears. But that was not enough to pass at the end of the line on Rossi: "In the fourth, fifth or sixth gear we had a stronger acceleration than Valentino, but we have difficulty when braking. It's good, but not good enough. I can not stop at the limit. "

"Especially in hard braking zones, if you're in sixth gear and delayed until the first transition, we have a small disadvantage. But on the line we're faster, "said Dovizioso says. "We are losing some ground on the straights," says Rossi. "The Yamaha is not the fastest bike on the straight. By 20 liters we have to fight. We need to adjust the motorcycle very thin. That's why we missing something at peak performance. From 280 km / h makes it noticeable. "

Ducati a World Cup candidate?
Austin was the confirmation that Ducati has built with the GP15 a motorcycle that can compete with the competition. "In Qatar, I could see that the Ducati compared to last season has been significantly improved. The bike is now quite similar to our machine, "analyzed Rossi. "When brakes are good, when accelerating, they have more power than we do. Therefore, they can pretty quickly accelerate out of the corners. "

"Last year they were pretty fast, but they continued to have difficulties. Now it is possible Ducati but to drive our lines, "said Rossi, 2011 and 2012, struggling with the then defeated Ducati and rarely came in landing nearby. In the drivers' standings after two races Dovizioso is just a point behind championship leader Rossi. Iannone teammate's World Cup fourth.

In the coming races Ducati has to keep fuel consumption in mind. However, no matter how successful the Ducati riders still celebrate during the season, they are always two liters more fuel than the Yamaha and Honda Pilot. Starting next season, all manufacturers may consume 22 liters.

Now that Ducati has a top bike , they don't have top riders, Dovi and Crazy Joe are doing a workman like job, and I'm hoping they grow into that ride. But I would like to see Stoner on the GP15. Honda didn't want to put him up on Pedrosa's bike because he is out of practice, might not win, can't find a crewchief for him, ect. ect. This is the same thing Honda did with Mike Hailwood when he wanted to come back, so Mike the Bike ends up with Ducati and hands Honda they're ... at the IOM for the first time in a decade.
The GP 15 is good enough to put a couple of mid packers up front, I would like to see a proven front runner on board.

*rolls eyes*
I'd hardly call Dovi a 'mid packer' He's a 125 world champ, a runner up in 250 twice and came 3rd in the motogp championship in 2011. Mid pack is 9th -10th. Dovi's worst year in moto gp was 8th with all the rest being 4th 5th or 6th.
Given the 4 aliens at the front consistantly... he is pretty much one of the best of the rest. Hardly mid pack at all.

Andrea Iannone (Ducati /. 5): "tire completely destroyed"
Nereo Balanzin - 13.04.2015-00: 48
5th place in the MotoGP race at the Circuit he often Americas Ducati rider Andrea Iannone was not satisfied, although it was not running around for the Italian in qualifying.

Andrea Iannone weekend was from the beginning more difficult than his team mate Andrea Dovizioso. "In the race I had a really bad start. On top of that Redding crashed in front of me. Now you know how much I had to catch up. I decided to push at the maximum, even though I knew that I have to pay at the end of the race it. But I had no choice, "analyiserte Iannone after the race at the Circuit of the Americas.

The fastest lap of the 25-year-olds showed what use he pursued the driver on top. "Then came the moment of reckoning. When three-quarters of the race was over, I had the tire completely destroyed. That's it. "Jorge Lorenzo displaced Iannone place. 5

After the end of the race Iannone had to park in the cool down lap his Ducati GP15. Was it because of lack of fuel as Dovizioso? I do not think that. We are currently trying to figure out what happened. "

"The key moment of the weekend was the qualifying. You have to start far forward in order to have a chance. On the other hand, I'm also happy because I set the seventh fastest time with the harder tires. I could not believe it. We are working on various little things, but I remain upbeat, "Iannone summarized.
