so last night I added some of this to my exhaust:
Cobra Skin Exhaust Wrap | Heatshield Products

a bit pricier than your average wrap, but maybe it's worth it?

due to access issues, I could only really wrap the exposed section of the horizontal cylinder header, and only the U portion of the rear header.

sunny and 95 degrees - I headed out for some mixed city and highway riding.

- highway. I've disconnected the flapper, so it's a little louder in highway cruise, but I still very much need to get a remap. no change in heat, and I'm getting the worst heat in a steady state cruise, where the motor would run closed loop and use the O2 sensors to try to run 14.7:1. BUT...the heat is coming from different places, and not from under the seat anymore.

- city. This was the biggest surprise. I'd say a 60-70% reduction in radiant heat while stopped at a stoplight. it seems to be going elsewhere than my butt and right thigh. where? don't know, don't care :p

so does wrap alone eliminate the heat issue? nope. it does have an effect though, so it's staying on.

Do a search on this forum about why you shouldn't wrap the pipes........

you mean in terms of possibly corroding and/or cracking the pipes? oh no! if that happens, I will HAVE to get new pipes, and why buy OEM when Akrapovic titanium costs just as much!

While the wife can't stomach paying for parts that replace perfectly good existing parts, if it's broken, it gets fixed in this household.

I got all angles covered brother :)

Sneaky but great way to buy a real exhaust system.

I'd never wrap exhaust pipes or manifold (car). That heat has to go somewhere. Hopefully they crack quick and you can show wifey how you "tried" to fix a hot bike problem but instead, you broke somethin lol.

Sounds like a lot of trouble to go through. Shoulda just stayed single lol

they may crack, but I doubt I'm that lucky.

in the meantime, I've spent time riding with the partially wrapped pipes, and I guesstimate that it has reduced the heat problem about 30%. So it's no cure all, but it's better than nothing!

Oh, and because it has basically eliminated heat coming through the seat, I now can notice and realize just how much heat is radiating off the rear subframe. Time to start looking for some frame covers. btw, the trick is to attach them with something like 3M double-sided tape. That way there's a couple millimeters of air between the carbon cover and the frame, and that's where the real insulating power comes from.

Rode an 848 with headers wrapped for 3 years before. Through speed, rain and storm, as it was both track and commuting bike. It was fine. The wrapped exhaust pipe actually outlasted the bike and my hip joint, which had to be involuntarily strengthened with a titanium screw.
Good quality exhaust pipe. ...... rider skill.

wonder how long this Cobra wrap will stay black? for now, I'm happy with its 30%-ish perceived heat reduction.

I wrapped the horizontal pipe and very little temp decrease. A week later wrapped the rear 180 pipe and engine temps when UP 5-10 degrees. I've wrapped many Ducati (and non-Ducati) pipes before, so it was done correctly. I never had engine temps go up. Took it off and temps dropped immediately. Good luck

The trick is to try and redirect the heat elsewhere, which sometimes takes making changes to where the wrapping is placed.

As previously stated, you can't eliminate heat, you just move it around. The engine is going to produce heat and it has to go somewhere. All you can do is try to make it go where you want it to go.

If this makes the heat go somewhere other than your ..., then i would say it is a success. :)

But i would just keep an eye on other things like the subframe, or bodywork (especially the lower), the paint, etc. These things are designed to be a certain distance, and with certain chemicals to be able to handle the expected heat in that area. If you have reduced the heat in that area by 30%, then that means somewhere else the heat has increased by 30%. I would make sure that isnt causing any issues.

now that you mention it, my coolant temps are about 10 degrees cooler than before. but I also removed the charcoal canister and exhaust servo, freeing up empty space under the fairings.

Isn't the idea of the wraps to reduce radiant heat, keep more of it in the pipe and out the exhaust, similar to the coatings?

I have everything ceramic coated on my FD RX-7 and underhood temps dropped significantly

+1, it ain't rocket science :D

oh man made me lol at my desk

And then laugh you azz off?

I wrapped my full termi and would never remove it. It helped dramatically with day to day life on the bike.

With NO negative aspects what so ever.

Hey each his own, but I like having a cooler seat.

just wrapping the U-loop under my seat has made the bike noticeably more bearable sitting in traffic, and it's been 90-95 degrees under the sun here in the South lately.

I just taped the underside of my seat with DEI Cool Tape. Don't know if that'll help any, but it gave me something to do while spending "quality time" with the wife, watching her chick flick movie....

If I was commuting I would definitely go this route
