Got a 1299s - filled it with fuel, went home only 2kms, next day bike was running terrible. In neutral engine sounds and revs fine, but in gear will hardly run, hops n skips n judders, like its a fuel or ignition problem. Thought it was some .... fuel so drained the tank, put fresh fuel and same problem. Maybe a traction control/ABS sensor breaking down??? Any ideas or things I should try before having to take the bike to Ducati???

If you had bad fuel from a combustion perspective, you probably would not have good idle speed. If you had contaminated fuel that caused the engine to run poorly due to say a clogged injector than draining the tank and re filling would do nothing because at that point you would have compromised the fuel filtration system and you would need to pull the pump to fix that. If you can pull the tank, you can pull the injector rail and look at the nozzles and also look at pump output pressure. Could it be in the ECU? maybe. So in a nutshell after all that. Take it to the dealer. Before that, the first place i would check is the clutch switch. If that is not working correctly it will def cause what you described.

Do you have the yellow engine symbol up on the dash? If there is a red block with writing in it which flashes up when the engine is running, then drops down to the left of the screen, read what it says. If none of this happens and the bike still runs like crap, it's likely fuel. Was there any visible contamination in the fuel you drained?

I have overfilled the tank on a hot day which caused the charcoal canister to get filled with fuel (overflow) this caused my bike to run like .....

although I don't remember it causing the exact symptoms you've described
I thought I would offer it up - in case you're looking for a reason to bin your charcoal canister anyway.

I had the same problem on my 1098. Took the mechanics months to figure it out. Replaced fuel, fuel filter, fuel pump, etc. and no luck. Bypassed the kickstand switch, no luck. Turned out to be the TPS. As the 1299 series are ride by wire, I'm not sure if they have a TPS. I would guess they do but maybe someone could chime in if otherwise. Your description is exactly what mine did then eventually it wouldn't even run when in gear other than idling. Might be worth checking.

mine ran like .... the other day when i put the front wheel in the wrong way around. no ABS ring - no TC signal.

check your wheelspeed sensors and their cables.

Blue Guy - the drained fuel went in my dirt bike and that runs fine , although carbuettor. No fault lights on the dash.

Its been a long time since a ducati has let me down. Last time was a voltage regulator on a 916, since then 999, 1098, 1199, hypermotard....... and no problems, thats life ....... we will sort it..

Regarding 1299 studdering etc.

I am sorry for you man!

It sound like you have the same issues I have had on my bike for the last year...! From your description it sounds like the same issues I have been having... Like yours mine idles fairly smooth but on and off again it will run terrible and runs very choppy under 6000 rpm.. It will not hold a steady throttle even at 70mph in 4th gear but it is really bad around 35 to 50mph in the city.. sometime after running at the same rpm on the highway it will suddenly just lose power and the rpm can drop down to almost stalling (In traffic) ** If I let off and pull in the clutch and coast then usually I can get it to start running again and I am not stranded out on the free way...So far I have been lucky and not been rear ended.. IT is a very scary bike to ride sometimes...

So far in an attempt to fix it I have had the complete throttle assembly , factory ECU and throttle unit replaced No difference.. I added a Rapid Bike Racing unit (which makes it run like a scalded ape when you hit the throttle) but it still runs poorly just putting around in town at legal speeds.. No dash lights or codes are thrown? The dealer has tried at least 15 times in the last year to fix it to no avail (yes they have adjusted the TPS sensor on their shop computer multiple times) so now I am getting the old "that is just they way they are" speech..

My friends 1299S runs great also the demonstrator models at the dealer I have ridden run great (they are a little rough compared to a 4 cylinder Jap bike) however it is nothing compared to how mine runs.......So if you have the exact same issue as mine unfortunately it will probably not be resolved. Let me know if you try a new throttle position sensor.. the Dealer will not change mine out since it doesn't throw a code or a warning light...

Good luck

Speedy

Sounds like your sensors are out of whack. It needs to go back to the dealer and have them reset everything on the DDS.

What was the fix? I also happened to overfill my 1199S and not sure if it is running like it should. It says on the tank if you overfill it could result in hard starting and engine hesitation. I have never had ducati before this and have it since few days only. Eversince i overfilled, i notice if something very mildly weird but then may be thats how ducati runs? Like i dont see too much wrong but it kinda seems like its about to die when i suddenly give gas but never dies it responds but it kinda give a feeling as if it was about to. Not sure if i am making sense but eversinxe i overfilled, i think i am thinking too much. Nevertheless, if someone does happen to overfill and runs into issues warned on tank sticker, what's the fix? Does it fix itself when it is ridden and no longer so full? Sorry if i sound like dumb. I probably am.
