How to replace Stock Handgrips?

As everyone else said, the stock barends are 12mm hex/allen key.

When removing the grips, use an aircompressor with a small nossle and blow some air in between the grips and the handle bar. The sucker will slide right off...

When mounting the new grips, I use an old motocross trick. I fill the new grip with a small ammount of gasoline/petrol, cover the hole and shake it a couple of times, then pour the gasoline/petrol out. The remaining gasoline/petrol will act as a lubricant, making it A LOT easier to slide the new grips on to the handle bar. It also dissolves the rubber ever so slightly, and when you let them sit for a little while and it dries/vaporizes the new grips kind of stick to the handle bar a lot better. To really make sure they sit tight, use a piece of safety wire that you wrap around the grips as tight as you can. One at each end... This eliminates the need for messy grip-glues and stuff....

Good luck!

the bar ends are 12mm allen and the reason you may not be able to get them off is because they or at least mine had loctite all over them. took me multiple tries to get them off. dont try and use strength wont work you need to hit it sharply down with a mallet. at least i did thats what worked for me if i leaned into it thing never moved.

to get the new grips on alcohol or hairspray slides them right on it will evaporate and you are fine

...hairspray in the garage....?.......just what the heck is going on in your garage...?

I use the hairspray method when mounting new grips as well.

As to why hairspray is in the garage... That's an easy answer; you use it with a lighter as a backup blow torch to unfreeze locks in the winter... Or to kills wasps in the summer. :)

i use hair spray to get them back on, they stick like hell when dry!!!

Hair spray in your toolbox???? I'm not even going to ask...... :)

At the track we used brake cleaner to repair/replace grips for clip-ons after the occasional off-road excursion.
Spray it down the inside of the grip, hold your hand over the open end/hole of the grip and then give it a good push and it's on. But you have to work fast as it can setup in 10-15 seconds.
Advantage is that there's no waiting. By the time you're done safety wiring the end of the grip, it's dried/cured and on tight.

Get your triple square bits at Sears.com

Air compressor is the real trick to getting grips off and on, along with a bit of safety wire to keep 'em in good knick on the bike.

Nope, Not a 12mm Allen Key. Went to the good ole local hardware store and 10mm was too big. 8mm was too small as well. Now I have to order a 9mm. wttfff?

Its a 12mm hex. Thats been posted on this forum quite a few times.

I just used some WD40 sprayed under the grips about an hour before and that way you can keep them.

Its always nice to sell your bike with all original parts. Lots of people like that as buyers.

Well ..... Bought a 12mm allen wrench off of amazon and its..... 12mm. Dont do drugs kids.

But besides that, they seem like they are welded on. any tips on how to get them off?

People have reported varying degrees of tightness. Mine were pretty easy with a socket but I know Mark and a couple other guys had a hell of a time getting them off.
