Interesting Article re WSBK 1199

Good article. I don't know if the population of Ducati riders would except such a radical change in design after producing the 1199. You would think with the 899 Ducati would have the data to know if a 100cc bump in that engine could do it.

I really like the thought of aV4.... Take the GP bike and de-tune it for reliability, we could all be riding versions of the desmocidci in 2015-16 :)

I feel that the L-twin can be used in the Ducati line up for the 899 and maybe in other bikes, but DUCATI needs to come up with a L-4 config. motor to compete with the inline 4's of WSBK. Perhaps a 1099SPS? Ducati went from chassis 1198R to non-chassis 1199 - it's not like they have not evolved the brand before. The 1199 is the perfect example. Now build a bike that can compete and WIN with a L-4 at 1000cc or 1099cc. It's the only way forward.

Good read and interesting info on the Superquadro! It would seem kinda of disappointing that they designed an engine that is at its maximum capability and is not even competitive in WSBK. One might think that this would have been discussed during the initial conception and design followed by some serious R & D. Maybe that's just my opinion... I like the sound of the V4! Ducati has their work cut out for them in the racing world between WSBK and MotoGP.

if the insight and speculation on this board are accurate, it doesn't sound like the 1199 sl homologation special is going to be reducing engine capacity any.

i've always been in the i-want-a-ducati-v4 camp. rules shouldnt have to be played around with--they should be clean and simple. 1,000cc 2, 3, or 4 cylinders. 2 is obviously handicapped by physics in certain respects (isn't that why ducati abandoned tradition and doesnt run an l-twin in motogp?). i think it's time their superbikes moved on too.

well, they might go the route on the SL to have a longer stroke/ smaller - bore version.
like a not so high revving torque beast, just for wsbk-homologation

Add another to the "I want a V4" camp. With all the traditions they did away with in the 1199 the one that stayed that I wanted to go was the V-twin. I'd rather see Ducati compete on the same playing field as the others, and I suspect they would be able to make a stonking fast V4. They've been running a V4 in GP for a decade now; it's time to recognize that racing has moved beyond the twin format.

I don't really buy the idea of a 1000cc twin being competitive. No matter what you do, having half as many cylinders as the competition given equal displacement will leave you down on peak power.

Good article indeed. However, it would have been nice if they proofread or spell-checked the article before hand. Nevertheless, I thought a v4 Duc in WSBK trim was in order before the pani was released and I'm still hoping DucAudi goes in that direction.

agreed. shouldve kept the frame (tragic mistake as seen in motogp) and done away with the twin.

We all buy Ducati superbikes so we can have the best money can buy.

The reality is the engineers and upper management have designed themselves into a dead end. Honda's coming V4 for the public hopefully will make Ducati re-design their L4 so the company can start winning back MotoGp, WSBK and the public again. Also they need to get rid of the frameless superbike because of the harmonic distortion from engine vibration at speed.

The new Ducati superbike should be an L4 with a sandcast crank case, titanium rods and a beautifully machined frame out of aluminum and /or titanium. Also, the Ducati superbike needs to have 3D telemetry for traction control. Remember, the Aprilia does not have the most powerful engine but rather has the best traction control to enable using all the engine's power safely.

That's a bike I would love to buy. I don't want to buy the Honda V4 but I probably will...

Inconsistencies in the article and only one opinion. Power to weight was not addressed, that plays huge factor irrespective of the HP cited. Unrestricted performance still needs to be fine tuned in which case would take advantage of the tires and throttle response at the upper end and midrange. A lot is yet to be seen with the current design as well as the rider's adaptation. Too early to tell, IMO. Armchair readers sit back and jump to conclusions while the actual race team is rigorously seeking #1, easier said in a few paragraphs than actually done out on the track. I take written assessment with a grain of salt. Ducati will get there and probably with this very bike.

And you heard it from me first. Heck I got $30K invested in this so I better be right!

Not sure why the old restrictions for an entirely different engine design (50mm intakes) carried over to a completely new bike/engine. Now if the Panigale was crazy competitive from the outset and was mopping the competition, THEN you should restrict it slowly but surely...
