Is Panigale the right bike for me?!

As much as I want to love the panigale, I have to say I was a bit disappointed...

I was about to buy the 2013 Panigale S, today went on a test ride of a 2012 Panigale S, and wasn't 100% satisfied, the power did move from down and midrange way up above 7k where it wakes up. I found myself downshifting on the highway to get some power... That is not what the twin engine represents!

I also hoped for a grin on my face, but pani did not deliver.

Now in contrast last year I demoed an F4 MvAugusta and loved almost everything about it! The engine is phenomenal everywhere in the power band! Had constant grin on my face, now considering the F4RR.

My question is, does the new Up Map/Fueling Map significantly change the power delivery?

I want to love the bike but as of now its not a 100% as it stands the decision to buy this bike over MV would be more a move with your head than your heart.

Please let me know if the new maps improve the situation? Thanks.

try the BMW S1000rr -- it is for me to date the best bike i've ridden...

The new map on the dyno sheet I saw was +19 ft lb at 4500 rpm and +12hp at 6500 rpm. It is a significant seat of the pants difference. The new 41T rear sprocket also adds alot down low.

I am riding one on Saturday, however I think I can add something here.

It sounds as though your heart is set on the Pani and you want to love it, however first ride did not do it. From what I have read, it is somewhat tame below 7 to 8 K before you really feel it. The new map won't change that but the sprocket update would.

My suggestion would be to step back (wait a week) and try and take some of the emotion out of it. Then go ride the MV, Beemer and the Duck; then wait a week and make a selection.

get the 41 spocket, they even have a factory map to match a new config, should blow your pants off

personally, i agree with the freeway riding, i can't get past 4th gear

With respect. Couple of things, this is a forum of passionate Ducati 1199 owners and not a community of sales or business development people. The question of which bike is best for you is a question that you and who ever benefits (and is paid to) i.e. SALESMAN can address. Your extremely lucky to have access to a wealth of information based on the FREE contributions of this forum.

So, why not spend some time and do some research ? There are already plenty of threads detailing feedback from upmaps and power delivery.

It sounds as if you like the idea of owning the 1199, but it turned not to be the bike for you. I don't believe a new map, new sprocket or new heat shield will change that. I would take another test ride to confirm, then buy the MV or whatever suits you.

I would check and see if you you're riding in the right mode. Typically, a demo bike will be set to "wet." However, the "race" mode is what you are desiring. The bike is a beast on the freeway!

If the bike is a '13, doesn't it already have the up-map?

Ooops, my bad, I had to go back and see that you rode a '12. I would have thought the dealer had already done the up map. I test rode a '12 and the dealer had done it - but in fairness it was the owner of the dealers personal "demo".

Thanks for the replies, I did ride an s1000rr back in 2010 when they first came out, and was not impressed, also low on power down low and in the midrange, now I heard this was fixed as of recent.

I do love the panigale, the looks, technology behind it the flickability etc but was disapointed during the test ride, the bike was in Race mode. Everything apart the down low/ midrange power is amazing, the dealer should get 13' demos soon so I hope the new map will put the smile back on my face!

A few bikes were capable of putting true smile on my face, 848 evo, cbr1000rr, MV Augusta F4. Wished it would also be the pani, still have hopes as my 13 Panigale S should be here within the next few weeks, its either the up map will make me fall in love with it or the F4 will be my next bike.

Once again those who have the new maps installed without the sprocket (I assume thats the config of 13' Panigales) Please share your experiance.

Ok... Just so I am clear here... you were not impressed by the 1199 or the S1000rr...but you were by a 848 and a Cbr1000:confused:

848 evo was my first intro to a twin, at the time I had an R6 so the shift was immense in terms of down low and midrange, essentially what a twin should be. And I assume the 1098/11998 was even better.

The S1000RR was disappointment in terms of down low and mid range, when it first launched, like I said I haven't experienced the latest improved version which I will test ride as soon as I get the chance.

Back when I test rode the 848 evo I thought ducati was a perfect bike for me I loved the low end grunt. And after panigale launched I loved everything about it and assumed that the engine has the same characteristics, but the power went up, and changed what ducati essentially is meant to be, like I said I really hope the fueling/up map change things back to origin, as I have a deposit on a 13' S and do want the bike to be the bike for me.

Hope it all makes sense, thanks for the replies.

Confusing indeed? However, in his defense the 848 has lots of torque down low in typical L twin fashion. :)

Waiting on definition of "down low".

Aside from 1st gear starts at stop signs/traffic lights/etc., I stay above 5k. What does the OP call "down low"?

I'm just not sure what the complaint is on this. Ride it where (RPM-wise) you like it. As others have pointed out, if you want to keep it out of "down low" at lower speeds....put a 41t on it. I have yet to run across any il-4 that has as much "down low" as any equivalent displacement twin.

I went from a 1098SFS to the pani. Rode it before the up map and to me, seat of the pants difference was pretty awesome! The SF had tons of tq, I could pick up the front wheel from 2700 rpm in first with just a twist of the throttle on stock gearing with a full sys exhaust. Its kinda funny with the 99 because I keep the revs a bit higher than I did on the SF without even noticing it. To your question, there is a pretty big improvement in trq after the upmap. And it rides much smoother now at low speeds as well. Once you get past 5k you won't believe the .... storm that is brewing up after 7000rpm. Pardon my French, but it's just ......!

The bike is so planted as well I don't even think twice about the low end of the 1098 engine.

i suggest you try a 2013 beemer - if that bike leaves you lacking you need to ride in motoGP!

The panigale is the most beautiful easy to ride confy ducati i been on race wise.
Out of the other ducati race bikes.

But its not perfect. To me owning late bike and late cars you learn how to play with the engine to get most out of it.

This is like a 2 stroke or a vtec honda. Power is on the top band so rev it.
Its what its built for if u want power.

Changing sprocket or upmap may help but wont change the fact your being to easy on it.

When you're considering bikes at this level, unless you're going to be racing them at a high level, I believe you should be buying with you're heart not your head. You should be putting your head around the garage door just to look at it as you're going up to bed!! :D Not happy? Move on and get something else.

Few bikes if any are PERFECT all stock. Thats what upgrades and aftermarket parts are for. Build your bike to your own desires, specs and so forth. Change out the exhaust and adjust the sprokets if you feel that there is something lacking but the truth is that you will probably never find another bike out there that is 100% perfect as is. Be open minded, test drive and look at what the bike can be. Add some Carbon Fiber and little details to make it your own and you'll love your bike reguardless of your 1st impressions and that goes with any bike. Read past posts and make an educated decision with your heart
oh and ignore the heat! :D
