A Little Story For You

I was a Ducati Sales Rep between 2002-2004 and sold more 996, 748, 748R (including the one 748R Ducati sold directly to me which I raced in CCS) 998s and broke an all time record selling more Dukes in one year than the particular dealership had in THREE years! I think I still hold the record!
(Btw- this isn't a "toot my own horn" thread folks. It has a point.

For being one of the highest numbered Sales Reps on the East Coast I earned an all expenses paid trip to Napa Valley for the release of the 749 & 999 line - and got to ride them all before they were released to the public out on the beautiful vineyard roads of wine country! Not to mention First Class flight, transportation and an unreal first class hotel The main dealership dinner with all the other Ducati dealers across the country was truly unbelievable atop the Viansa Vineyard which must've cost them way over a million dollars easily! Those of you who may have attended these dealer events and new model launches can attest its FIRST CLASS GUYS!! **Big note: This is also where I was fortunate to meet one of my best buddies to this day, and the most stand up Ducati Dealer in the US- David Lillard of Redline Performance Motorsports where I have been blessed to obtain my best Superbikes near cost! A true friend who I have stayed in touch with he and his beautiful wife since that trip! (And she even races a 748R!)

WTF is your point Gunny?
Well, some of you may remember that in February 2002, on his first day of being appointed CEO of Ducati North America, newly crowned Joe Piazza (who came in from being Senior VP of Sales at Global Motorsports Group-which was the Company who owned Tucker Rocky, etc) made a VERY bold and self centered move. He literally moved DNA HQ from its home in New Jersey out to his backyard in Cupertino, CA for what he said was
"A normal Corporate thing to do when a company was not doing that well."
Let me tell you guys, this guy was a total Toolbag and wouldn't speak with anyone beneath him, unlike the fantastic successor Michael Lock who literally gave out his personal cell number to me, and everyone else he met during his tour of EVERY Ducati showroom across the country. He said to me "Hey of you ever come up with an idea which you think may better the Company give me a shout" Lock was truly first class and put the Co back together during his reign IMHO. Ok, back to MY story. :D

Well as easy as those previous model bikes went off the showroom floor for me, I must admit that selling the 749/999 series models was an extremely challenging and uphill battle in that year afterward! The Testastretta engine was new with their Desmodromic Variable Timing (DVT) and a big leap for potential new Ducati owners used to the older engines. Moreover, and what most EVERYONE noticed immediately, people just did not like the double sided swingarm, dual headlights atop each other, design and feel of those bikes! As difficult as it was I tried my best to use these "features and benefits" - as you Sales guys know, as selling points - saying they would be collector items one day due to the first double sided swingarms blah blah blah. Somehow I pulled it off but the general consensus was Ducati truly effed up everything with these designs and ruined the company. In an interview with Michael Lock in subsequent days he was asked these questions:

"Mike, You could really look at the 999/749 situation and how it all played out, and if it would've been worse, it really could've sunk the company. Because the decision to green-light that thing is a reason the stock tumbled, and worldwide Ducati hit a big speed bump because of that bike." AND ALSO

"Weren't you surprised that TPG didn't do enough market research to know that the 999 was going to be controversial, to say the least. It almost ruined the company!"

We ALL have our favorite Ducati models and the many attributes which make them our faves. Several members here have up to 12 Ducati's in their own garages today (I actually know of one member here who may have more than that!) Many of us have owned numerous models over the years, sometimes wanting the newest upgrades and hottest models on the market. To many around the world they are the symbol of status and style! So many celebrities own them including Brad Pitt, Michael Jordan, Guess who literally was the first American to purchase one of the very first Desmosedici RR's off the line when they were only being discussed for release? Friggin Tom Cruise! And then of course we have idiots like Justin Bieber dropping his standing still.

Personally I have owned 6 different Ducati's in my lifetime and miss certain things about all of them! I admit that one mistake I made was trading in my 1996 Supersport 900SS/SP for the 1198s Corse, despite it being a Limited Edition and all - which then was subsequently sold to obtain the 1199s Tricolore I have now. No doubt the 900 SS (which had a 944 "kit" dropped in it along with many other engine upgrades) and it's 2 Valve engine was unreal when it came to low end torque!

In summary (PHEW huh?) I figure we all own a Ducati for different reasons and those of use who track or race them are definitely doing what the Superbike line is made for IMHO. Its just something special between us all and things like this forum enable us to share experiences, bikes, mods, and stories like this novel I just wrote! -lol. Though I don't get out on mine much at all anymore (You all know the reasons why behind that by now) , and pretty much consider my Tri a "Show Bike" due to the Bling Factor and all - I still love reading about all the stuff here as often as I can. Matter of fact I was just talking to another "founding member" back from when Duc first started the site - and we were laughing at how it seems we are reading about all the same issues all over again with the new 1299 members who are new to the forum. The "Heat, Smoke, Stalling, Seats, etc etc" because these are ALL the exact same issues we all dealt with when we bought our 1199's when they were first released! I also had to laugh about the one post which said "Why are there so many threads about the 1199's when this is supposed to be a 1299 forum?" - LMFAO! I will leave that one alone

All I wish is for all of yoo's guys to stay safe out there and never forget these A-Holes in cars who do everything else in their cars but pay attention and drive the damn thing straight! How many times do we end up reading it in the news "I never even saw the motorcyclist!" and someone ends up dead! I am sure we all know someone who was killed on a bike in our lives, and I know some members who were actually present when this occurred too! As someone who has seen WAY TOO MUCH death first hand- I just don't want to read here that it was any of the membership of this great Ducati forum! Thanks for taking the time to read my long ... story folks!

Semper Fidelis,

Gunny Fitz

Figured I'd toss in some pics of my bikes over the years here, rather than more words. Good call huh? :D

Pics continued...............

Again, thanks for taking up your valuable time reading the words of a true Ducati lover who used to eat, sleep, and breathe race gas AND LOVE IT!

Unfortunately, my racing & riding days are done and I live life vicariously thru all you guys thru the words you type within this forum! As a 90% Disabled Veteran who took one too many IEDs for the team, I can now sit back, watch my friends in AMA / MotoAmerica rip up US tracks on the latest and greatest technology bikes - and say to myself "That could've been me!" LMFAO.

Cheers to you all my fellow members ! OOHRAH!

PS. The shot of me on the showroom floor trying to sell a 748 to that young kid was probably in 2002-2003. He went on to become a Marine SSgt who joined the Corps because of me (His Boot Camp Graduation photo of us together as well) , was SEVERELY burned over 50% of his body in Iraq 2006 from a diesel packed IED. Ironically, a young Lt. ordered him to switch seats with him that day inside the Humvee-and that Lt was drastically killed in the spot this friend of mine sat on every combat mission. Needless to say he lived with Survivors guilt for many years and denied it to the fullest. He fought back and semi recovered enough to remain in a Recon unit and deployed to Afghanistan even scarred over his entire body. He was finally medically discharged due to hip issues from too many airborne jumps and tried to start a civilian life in Texas last year.
The day after last Thanksgiving he ended all his emotional and physical pain by putting a frigging shotgun in his mouth and leaving myself and all his loved ones in a state of total confusion and shock which I am still having a VERY difficult time learning to cope with, and guess I always will. :(
So to Staff Sergeant TJ Edwards, Rest in Eternal Peace my Brother!

I've read some pretty good posts here, but that one takes the cake, Mr. Fitz.

One of the few regrets I have is that I didn't dedicate more of my earlier years to doing something that I truly loved as a career. What I would do to be at a release for a new Ducati model, not to mention all of the associated networking and introductions. Side note: I like what I do now and am grateful to be in the role I am in.

I never knew much about that part of Ducati's story. For many years I would say to myself "one day I'll have a brand new Duc and love every minute." I would say to others "why would I buy a bike that doesn't necessarily beat something that is half the price?" Now that I don't have to play that side of things (and I've grown up a bit), I can enjoy my things and start to learn more about the history and cool stories like these. It truly makes the experience a ton better.

I can totally see how the 999 would create that reaction, and I would've reacted the same. I guess looking back to something that is so unique and so out of my realm makes it intriguing to me.

Anyways. Awesome read.

Nice read Gunny, thanks for taking the time to post this and your photos. Just a little more grey hair there in the last one than the first. ;)

Cheers
JT

Great post(s) hoss (you know who I'm talking too)....LOL.. I'm still a Duc guy...been slogging through some issues the last few years but I gotta say in my 250K+ street miles I'm never happier than when I'm on a Ducati.

This summer I think I'm finally getting my ST 2.1 on the road. Looking forward to re connecting with some of my long time Ducati friends and customers....

I'll keep my opinions regarding various "superbikes" to myself simply because my work involves aesthetics of the various bikes as compared to the mechanical underpinnings. Having said that... I guess I'm a relic because IMHO you just can't have more fun on a bike (on the street) than while riding a big bore 900ss (either 944 or in my case 980 big bore) that is properly sorted. Especially if it tips the scales at about 360 lbs as mine did. But WTF do I know, I'm a dinosaur. Shrugging my shoulders........ Ducati's are in my blood.

peace out

the paint sniffer.

Great posts Gunny, they definitely make me think about life and my passion for bikes. ...., if it wasn't for buying my Tri and getting on this forum I would have never met you! I can honestly say that it was awesome hanging with you, Lisa and Russell and hopefully I'll be back that way sometime in the near future so we can hang out again. Thanks for everything bro!

Oh and as for the 999...there's a uniqueness about it that oddly draws me to it like a bug to a bug zapper.

Comparing and contrasting the 999 to Ducati's typical stylistic cues? Seems pretty appropriate for this thread. Substantiating the statements made with first-hand experience of Ducati's corporate culture and how this model affected the public market and Ducati... Seems in line for me.

I take it you guys may have had conflicting views in the past. Due to the fact that Fitz isn't pushing any advice on a rider, and is only contributing to a discussion based on model preference due to nostalgia factor, there's no need to interject if you don't have the same opinion.

This isn't a break-in period or lean-angle indicator thread [emoji2]

RSR,

if you don't want to read his stuff, block him, you won't see it any longer.

as a guy who knows gunny:

censorship on a public forum? really? take your forum and shove it up your collective ....

freedom of speech...ever hear of it?

half of the adult males in my family have served and half of them didn't come back. they would not stand for selective pandering to appease the sensitivities of others who might be offended by "words". that would offend them and the principles they fought for

and before you go any further; I still have my uniformed services card in my back pocket.

Gunny; go cry me a river.

Wow, way to be a ....... Glossing over one or two posts was literally too hard for you wasn't it?

Yay, you have a CAC card. Post up your DD and let's see how many stars you have on your CIB/CAR there warrior...

Rsr, thanks for confirming our predictions on how you are going to reply.

And thanks for your service as well.

We also have the freedom of choice here.

You choose to read what you read. You don't have to.

And your point is what, my whole family served as did I and I barely made it back multiple times. the only time I've ever heard ....... crybaby .... come out of a service members mouth is when they are guard or reserve. you can cry a ....... river. Id bet my CIB your a guard.

BTW Gunny is a good buddy of mine and we both deal with the same .... just to a different degree and he is one person that no one should ever get ...... with.

Selective pandering. You are the only one complaining about his posts. Nobody is going to appease you. You are just a scab on the backside of humanity's scrotum. The mods have the right to remove anything they please on this forum, its in the rules.

Combat injuries effect individuals in different ways. Im sure you will never have to experience anything such as he has. How he chooses to deal with PTSD is his choice and his alone.

He was in shortly before I got to PI Gunny, He looked familiar.

I believe he graduated from Parris Island in 2004?
Thank you Grayson. :)

I thought that looked like the Island.

BTW, I may be half blind but those sure look like First Sergeant stripes Gunny....:D

I constantly worry about my younger brother. He spent many years in the Army with the 160th. Even though he has been out for a few years, he still has issues sleeping well at night.

The only thing I can do is be there for him if he needs me (he knows this).
