....at the Manchester MC show.......panigale S

First thougths....

aesthetics....very nice,...but not stunning. A well balanced very modern aesthetic without anything dramatic.Very well considered intergration of the front inner-fairing top section, from dash and around the froks, ....seat was well integrated with tank and rear cast support section.

What was noticable was how narrow the top fairing looks whilst sat on the bike,.....its miniscule ! Which is why the handlebars look so prominent from the front of the bike.

The tank felt perfect,...wide enough to notice you inner thighs were touching the sides, but not being pushed outwards like some of the jap 1000cc tanks.
The seat area looks very "waisted", and good for it, but didn't feel narrow at all whilst sat on the bike.

Nothing stood out as being unsightly or out of context with its neighbouring parts. The area that I thought would look unsightly, the rear cylinder exhaust loop, under the seat,...was fine and less obtrusive than expected.

The fit of some of the black plastic mouldings was poor, ie the ignition cover, the mouldings that join the ingnition cover. The fit of the side fairings to the black filler in-between the tank.....big, inconsistent gaps.

The fairings themselfs were very thin,...but not "flimsy" as some have described them..... they are very thin to get the weight down.

The ABS unit in the inner right fairing looks a bit unfinished,...like a working prototype !

Ergonomics,...I'm 5'9" and the position felt right,...the handlebars do feel more relaxed (being nearer and higher). My knees did touch the back of the side fairings and can see this getting scuffed from leathers etc....clear film sort that.

The pegs felt very "right" for me. High enough without feeling too high and not like I would need to buy adjustable rear-sets. Ok, I didn't ride it, but that was the first impression.

What I was supprised at was how light the bike felt,... the bike was not on a "rear stand", so could move it from side to side. Tried the 848 evo for comparison and it felt a LOT, LOT lighter,...presumably because some of the weight (exhaust) were underneath the engine.

You are compleatly un-aware of the rear ohlins shock,...it does not touch your leg !

I have heard it said from people over here that it makes the 1098/1198 series bike look dated,....I didn't think so,....just different approach to a bikes architecture....the Bayliss rep and 848 evo next to it still look stunning, just different to the panigale.

Personally, I didn't come away thinking it was visually stunning,...nice but not stunning for me (that should rattle a few cages !).....I definetly think it will be an easier bike to ride, .....weight/handlebar position and weight distribution.

I think we have to accept that this bike is first and formost "function over form ",...Its designed to be race bike first and attractive second..... thats not to say in isn't attractive, just not got the aching 916/ MV/ 'SEDICI ETC X-FACTOR !....but thats just my opinion.

Thanks for the very thorough examination and critique. It's a shame that for this price we're going to have to put up with unfinished/prototype-looking bits. It also sucks that the 848 next to it looked "stunning" whereas the 1199 was "very nice,...but not stunning".

I spent about an hour with the 1199s at the NEC back in November. Sitting on it, leaning off and rumbling around the bike.

I have to agree with your conclusions though I would suggest, give it some time on the looks department. After all the hype, I was a little disappointed by what I saw, though I have grown to appreciate it more now.

I also noticed a few finishing touches that were less than expected though I have to remind myself that Ducati superbikes first and foremost are race bikes that are also beautiful. :)

Thank you for your critique. Just wanted to know, if there is anyone out there that is 5'11 or taller that can comment on the ergos of the bike? As far as the plastic on the bike, remember you are paying for the motor and electrical hardware wizardry, as well as R&D. You should see the plastic on the BMW S1000RR!

I just got back from the bike show in Edmonton and I sat on it and it felt really comfortable I am 5'9. As far as the fit and finish, it is better than any other sport bike there. I loved it and can not wait to throw a leg over mine!!!!

A 6'1" buddy joined me at the NEC and looked at home on the 1199. He said that it felt comfortable and roomy. I could see that being the case as I, at 5'10", would like the resets up and forward just a little for the perfect fit, but I like a more compact fit than most.

Just saw the bike on YOU-TUBE at the edmonton show......that one was definetley far better on the fit of the plastics to the one on display at Manchester uk show.

Nice indeed - I'm hopeful the one I saw at the NEC in NOV was a early or even pre-pruduction run. Bet it was the same one you saw in Manchester.

Thanks for the review, I will be seeing the bike at the NYC show, on January 21. The wait is becoming tougher by the day, but I am enjoying the pain!

I seen it this weekend at the DC IMS show and boy is that thing compact. IMO the bike would look wayyy better once you remove the mirrors and the plastic rear fender.

Hey guys,, I seen the bike at the Edmonton bike show as well I'm 6'2" 210 pounds,, I thought it was like sitting on a Ninja 250. I ride an Aprilia RSV4 and don't get a very good tuck as it is a small bike but wide seat keeps the balls of my feet off the ground.

I love the new Duc but not sure if it is for me,, I sat pretty good , nice narrow body, legs fit decent on the sets but when I leaned over I felt like the bars were a tad to close then they should be. No more uncomfortable then My Aprilia,, maybe more so, though I couldn't stay on the bars long as I am recovering from a cracked wrist. So far all 7 bikes from Edmonton and all 6 from Calgary have been sold. I will have to test one before putting down that kind of cash myself. A tad jealous of the first owners that get theirs. Congrats.

I really like that they are not overly expensive for the base model,, 20k. roughly the same as my bike.

gday there retics, what did you think of the bike overall, look the goods??must suck being that tall, being 2foot minus 8inches its not a problem for me,lol.
cheers burty.

Overall I really liked it,, I didn't notice the fairings as being cheap or thin as mentioned above, the fit an finish I thought was really good, I do think that it needs a rad cover in the worst way, the front wheel is so close to it I'm sure it would get damaged easily , my RSV4 has a guard on the lower portion stock. I think the 1199 could use one. The fairings were very tight to the bike, better then the 1098 I rode this summer, no wide open gaps or spacers, I really liked that.
I imagine that there have been quite a few people on and off of this bike at the show from it traveling around,, the tank was scratched up very bad. needs a cover ,, something like 3M would be great. or a rubber mat around the first quarter of the tank would be awesome,, look at the Honda CB1000 to see what I mean. The seat almost had a full 2" tear on it as well, hope the material holds up.
I didn't notice my knees hitting the fairing , I have fairly long legs, 33 inseam. I just felt a tad "top heavy" if you will, say sitting on a kids 50cc dirt bike,, like the grips were a bit close to my knees then I would have liked.

Hahaha,, No! She is a little "blonde" at times. I like the red,, Having a black Aprilia is a pain in the ass to keep the scratches away lol. I took a few videos at the Edmonton bike show for youtube, the MV Agusta F4RR was my second favourite bike. the S1000RR the blue an white paint looked an felt cheap.
