K&N or Sprint air filter?

Hi,

I have used K&N air filters in all my vehicles and never had an issue with the oldest being 25 years in my car. I got the Akrapovic low mount exhaust for my V2 Bayliss and it came with a Sprint air filter but I already had bought a K&N for it. Of course I am thinking K&N because of zero issues over decades of use but I thought I would ask all the smart people here what is the go with Sprint or Ducati air filters, are they better, why are they better, anyone heard of any crap getting through and engine problems using them?

Second question, doing the air filter change can you do it just by lifting the tank on the pin and holding it up with a piece of wood or do you need to remove the tank completely? Also can you get the air filter out without taking the top of the throttle bodies off or is that a definite removal? I have been hunting on Youtube and some clearly 1299 or 1199 bikes it is like a 2 minute job with video editing and others they just lift the tank a bit and rip it out.

The Akrapovic exhaust install was pretty straightforward after removing all the original stuff. Jesus that catalytic converter weighs 10kg. You cannot get the sound on video, it sounds 80% better in real life as you would all know, alot deeper and bass galore. If you want a look here is a Youtube video of it.

Let me know opinions on the air filters

Cheers

Ashley

Not smart, but do K&N filters still require oil? If so, that would be an immediate no-go for me.

I haven't had any issues with the Sprint. Its reasonably well built, I'm sure you could blow some reverse direction air to get more life out of it.

On my 1199 when I changed the filter I pulled the tank because it was so easy to do. I like to take a gander at and inspect everything when the opportunity presents itself. With the V4 platform, pulling the tank became more of a pain in the ... due to the fitting used. With the V4 its not a QD but rather a rubber hose on a barb with a worm drive hose clamp.

Yes I still spray the K&N red filter oil on it once every few years depending on how much use it has had.

I have 60,000kms on my 2016 ZX-10R as my daily ride.

The Sprint says it is a lifetime air filter as well. They use it for factory fitted in the Superleggera & R versions so Ducati must rate it.

I am cool with trying the latest technology. When I flashed the ECU with Woolich to disable the exhaust servo, the AIS system & to set the fan temp to 95c.unlike my ZX-10R or Yamaha R1M the fan on the Ducat ran the entire flash time which was 6 to 7 minutes. 1st time I have flashed without having the battery hooked up. But it made it.

I put those Ducati Spacers throttle spacers in thats why I was just trying the throttle in the video. Tight as after. Only done 2kms so I wasn't going to rev the .... out if it. I have had Covid so I was stuck at home just fitting all the parts I have collected waiting for it to arrive.

Layer of red over green. First the carbon frame takes a different dimension filter than stock so the aftermarket filters don’t work which didn’t matter because there was no way to get a traditional filter over the top of these and into the slot

I know sprint filter says its "lifetime," but mine started to deteriorate after about 7-8 years of street/track use. Seemed like a pretty long time and I wasn't mad having to replace it again.

Interesting..... K&N always last.
Did you clean the sprint filter regularly?

Depends on use. If it was falling apart after 7 years of average use what does that say for protecting the engine?

Do you really think it matters? 7-8 years of street/track wear on a motorcycle engine, I'd bet the substantial wear isn't from incoming air.

I put the Sprint filters in two of my Ducatis. I like them more than the K&N filters simply because I don't have to oil them. The tech behind them (Sprint) is pretty cool.
