I've been on the beneficiary end of getting to ride a lot of cool bikes because of friends. On track: 749R, Hypermotard, RC30, RC51, S1000RR, and some other very well sorted track bikes, SV650, XR650 Supermoto (I bought my own shortly after), CBR600RR that placed very well in the Canadian Nationals. On the street I've ridden BMW HP4, RC30, Hypermotard, multiple VFRs, Triumph Speed Triple, etc. I once blew up my bike on the first session of a three day private track day. I didn't even have to wonder what I'd do, multiple people all offered bikes. I rode every session for three days with my choice of just about anything I could have dreamed of.

I'm pretty sure that all of these guys knew at the time that I couldn't write a replacement check if something happened. They all knew that I was a poor student at the time. I've let my friends ride my bikes over the years but typically most of them have all been riding longer than I have. Now that I'm the one about to buy the cool bike that everyone will want to ride I couldn't dream of not letting them ride it. I'll have it insured, if something happens it'll suck but I'd rather share my good fortune.

I understand the sentiment and believe me I feel the same way about my dirt bikes. I've just seen way too many people that don't quite understand the power underneath try to do way too much on the street...way too soon. My bike, friends bikes, and their own bikes are all included.

The environment you speak of is a very controlled environment and a lot different than handing someone the keys on the street for a joy ride. At our track days, there are several folks that I'd let ride my R...I usually also take my 2013 R1 'just in case' I screw up and I'd almost let anyone ride that if needed to or wanted to. Two totally different situations in environment and in price points.

After having paid to half-ass fix the Ninja at 21 years old because I'm pretty sure my insurance would have dropped coverage or raised my premiums so high I would never be able to afford it (I had a few speeding tickets a year back then), I did not consider making a claim a valid option.

Those claims have a life of their own and the long term costs general outweigh the short term benefits. I hate insurance providers btw.

You sir are the man for letting your wife ride the beast.
Well, she's a fast intermediate level racer and she has her head screwed on straight, so I had no problem with letting her ride it; there are two of my riding buddies that I absolutely WILL NOT let ride it...
