My god that new exhaust is ugly.

Also, lol at Europe for getting the short end of the emissions stick for once.

new diavel looks great, I used to own one and thought it was a great bike.

I always been interested in the Diavel. I will like to see the new one as well. I will need a daily commute bike as I sold all my bikes before going overseas. I am acutally stuck on which one I should get.:D

The original design didn't have to meet Euro 4 emissions standards, and some countries still don't, thus the two different exhausts. I expect the new Cats take up too much room to integrate in the original style belly cans.

Wait, but the Ducati web site claims that both the US and the non-US bikes meet Euro 4 standards?

So, is that what we can expect on the 2017 1299 and next gen R?

No thanks.

If you have to change the exhaust location, at least put the exhaust under the seat like the 1*98s, or 898.....
or like the ZARD exhaust on the 1199...

Too expensive, since it would require too many new other parts. The shotgun style doesn't require much change, and it does keep the weight lower and more centered. And, while I haven't seen it mentioned, if they're having to do that to the 959 to meet Euro4 standards, I'll be surprised if the shotgun cans don't show up on same=market 1299's...

I expect that's likely a misprint - zero probability they'd have spent the money and taken the styling and weight hit to do a completely different exhaust for those markets unless they had to.

I'm confused as well. I guess we have to look at gas and noise emmissions separately?

Gas: Euro4
Noise: Reduction required in the EU, but not in the US.

That might well be it, since noise was the reason for that type of exhaust on the Japanese market bikes we've already seen in years past.

<EDIT> especially likely in light of this from the press blurb: "The two heads and aluminium top covers now feature a ribbed design to reduce mechanical noise – a critically important pre-requisite for Euro 4* compliance. For the same reason, a different cam timing chain was used."

EURO 4 compliance is mandatory for 2016 in Europe...hence the side exhaust. Existing motorcycles are not affected, so the 1299 will not get the same exhaust.

EURO 4 comes to the USA in 2017 and again...won't affect existing models. Also the reason why the US model of the 959 still keeps the under-engine exhaust...

Either way...new models will certainly look different...especially since the upcoming EUOR 5 and EURO 6 certainly won't help...

Noise level requirements are actually the same between Europe and USA (80 dBA IIRC), however, they are measured differently. In Europe, the sound is measured with the motorcycles accelerating at full throttle in second gear from a set speed (less than 30 mph). The microphone is set 25 feet away and is being passed by the motorcycle some 30 feet after acceleration starts.

In the USA, the microphone is further away (50 feet) but it requires the motorcycle to pass it using 55% of its rated RPM in second gear (where engine supposedly peak HP)...so...naturally it will pass at a higher speed...

I think the Multistrada Enduro is Ducati finally admitting what we Multi owners have known since the 1200 came out - it's a damned sport touring bike, nothing more. "Enduro" mode on my bike is configured as my rain mode setting.

But as far as tarmac-based sport touring bikes go, it's as good as it gets :) Prettier than my old ST4 as well.
