Marchisini S rims VS BST Carbon rims

about buying BST's because of looks.

A few years ago the 7 spoke design is really cool!! plus the shine of carbon fiber rims in the parking lot is really something else. but fast forward four years, the look of the 7spoke deisgn is starting to look "dated". It looks ok but the shape no longer envokes the reaction of "wow" or "ooohh". after a year of owning my Diavel I was so happy to receive an email that they are offering BST's for my second bike but to my dismay, it is the same 7 spoke design that I have installed on my 848 2 years ago!!

It is time for BST to provide a new shape or design to keep their products interresting. I mean look at the new 1199s wheels, it looks so freaking awesome. it looks very modern and so "2012"

Now if you were like me who had heavy cast aluminum wheels, the performance gain is night and day. and I mean it. It will feel as if your bike dropped 50lbs at speeds from 60mph and up. but if you ahve the light S wheels already installed and would like to change because of looks, imho, the S wheels look so much cooler. but if you manage a professional racing team or you are an expert rider, then saving lbs from rotational mass can mean from .5 seconds advantage to 2 seconds advantage.

Will I buy it once my S comes? not any more.

I agree somewhat but the WOW factor from the CF wheels is in the performance for me. The looks of BST CF wheels is probably a byproduct of the engineering effort that is set up for optimal light weight and strength, Any redesign may impact the performance or compromise strength. Im sure they could redesign something "more modern looking " but that would be a high risk to BST to recoupe the NRE effort because they are not selling these expensive wheels at mass production. If BST's competition makes something lighter and better im sure BST will go back to the drawing boards. Until then I don't expect to see a significant change in looks anytime soon.

I like the looks of the base wheels better than the S. The S wheels looks like "chicken feet" to me IMHO but if I had S wheels, I wouldn't change it due to the performance and handling of the S wheels. But if I wanted bling maybe I would go with Marchesini forged magnesium wheels or BST CF because any true superbike rider would understand and drool over performance than shinny chrome "modern looking" bling bling wheels like some of these street rider put on.

After all this back and forth, I think I am for the Marchesini forged mag 3 reasons:

1- They are the brand Ducati chose, so kinda OEM,
2- But, they are an upgrade to the S, so I won't keep thinkin', "shoulda bought an S"
3- The one post that says some track days forbid them. May be because the committee in charge of those track days can't afford them, so they don't want them, but I don't want to think my bike is limited in any way.

And they are only less than 2 lbs more then BST, and a few dollars less cost.

Hey, I am trying to ju$tify the whole thing! I already have Marchesini on my base, and they turn just as fast and true as the mags!

And just to add more - it's all visual. .. . OZ, marchesini, the ducati oem wheels - and just about all the other branded magnesium and aluminum high performance wheels are all produced by the same wheel manufacturer in Italy. OZ, Marchesini and Ducati S (non-cast wheels) are all produced by the same manufacturer - some under spec, some with their own spec that they utilize - but basically same manufacturer with different designs . . ..

BST is south Africa and are their own manufacturer.

Excellent choice

. I hear some tracks are banning CF wheels for track days. So forged mag might be the way to go. It's not because of reliability issue it's because everything has their breaking point and when CF reaches its breaking point it shatters and they don't want the chards left on the track where as forge magnesium and forge aluminum just snaps easier to clean off the track.

.

LOL . Take your hand off it dude .
