I can score a 2011 796 for about $5k, vs a new sv650 for 7k.

Is the Monster too much bike for a noob?

My M696 was my first bike. So I’d say no, it’s not.
But it could get very expensive very fast if you make noob mistakes so that savings of $2k can go out the window with a single tip over.
I suggest knowing yourself, your risk profile and your appetite for spending more if something goes awry. If you are innately responsible and risk-averse, then it may be something you can comfortably move ahead on. If you are hard on your things, like going fast, have a bit of a rule-breaking streak in you or have no money in reserves for fixes if something happens, then…

796 - The power is linear, pretty predictable Just respect the beast and you will be all ok.
It could get expensive later if it is not properly maintained by the previous owner. you will get addicted once you get used to it.

I’d say get a used SV650 for waaaaay less and learn on that. Once you get mastered and bored you can sell it and buy your Monster.

Big advantage of this is that the riding characteristics are same and maintenance is dirt cheap. Insurance is dirt cheap too.

This thread was created in more than one sub forum. My reply from the other...

"To be judged individually.

You have no idea what someone's background or ability is. You could have a Moto America all star feeding you gold, but it could be a farkle clear clutch remove one front brake caliber highway pull d-bag."
