My take on the new 1299 S (as a newbie)

Well put speedy, that's the same thing I say when people ask me about my 1199 coming from a gixxer 1000.

The Panigale 1299 S is one fine handling machine and it will take me some time to adapt. I am so used to winding out the motor of my ZX10 and making it scream down the straights. The Panigale is deceptively fast and requires a totally different riding style due to the dramatically increased torque down low.

I'm coming from a ZX-10 as well and this is the point I was trying to get across to Chris on the other thread - it's not just the torque number and the delta between other bikes like the R1 at peak, it's how the motor delivers that number across the rpm range. The Ducati is a different riding style.

The 1299 did not feel scary fast to me when I test rode it compared to the S1000RR, but it IS fast. It's a deceptive kind of power compared to the "screamer" inline 4s

I'm in agreement. Coming from a BMW S1000RR, the power comes on really strong between about 11,000 and 14,000 rpm, with not a lot happening below that.. The 1299 has a ton of power, but it comes on in a different way... My friend has a 2015 S1000RR and he and I weigh within 10 lbs of each other and in roll-ons, I am consistently 3-4 bike lengths ahead of him in every circumstance.

The other thing I have noticed is that all the 1299's power comes with the last few degrees of the throttle.. you really have to turn it WFO to get all the power. Race mode at WFO from 2nd, all the way through the gears is just cartoonishly fast.

Cheers.

Yup, that's the beauty of the big twins! Similar with the old TL'R and RC51's back in the days. They don't wind up as fast as the I4 but it's got the power.

I miss my TLR and especially my RC51... had Sato Bonzai exhausts, full Ohlins, oh man I miss that bike.

That's why I mentioned, it sucks in the street. Esp here in the Bay Area where traffic is inevitable and the roads are often bumpy, no thanks.

What's in Auburn? Berryessa to Calistoga is heaven!

I just rode the 1299 yesterday. I took out in rush hour north San diego traffic and the twisties. It was easier to flick than the 899. The throttle was very linear. It revs very fast transitioning from clutch disengagement, other than that super easy to ride, even that it was only the first launch that it was an issue. It does have very tall gearing. My only complaint for commuting was the default setting on the onlins seemed way firmer than the 899, but assume you can dial it soft for commuting. It was bumpy on some roads. It was easier to ride than the 1199. I would still commute on this bike.

The auto blipper downshifting was way cool, works very well, hit through a corner, it didn't upset the chassis at all.

FTR, BTW, FYI, I commute every day on Sofia. 16mi each way. It's what makes me love to go to work and love to get home :D

Quite understandable, my ....... has been rogered (Arsehammer in prison) to the point that, i have to wear "depends" diapers because I always .... myself after the sudden onset of torque past 6000RPM:eek:

Note to self. No used leathers from PA.

Not sure anything sounds better than RC51 with Bonzai's!
