Hello,, I am Bob in NC and a couple of months ago I bought a 2010 Multistrada 1200 ABS in good shape with a little over 17k. My last 20 yrs history was V4s and inline fours so I am getting used to this engine. Of course the power is ridiculous and I haven't even come close to full throttle.

I ride it to work everyday as long as there is no ice on the road or in the forecast for the day. I am looking forward to April when I will head out to the Deals Gap/Cherohala Parkway area with a small group. I really want to ride those roads and see how I can do. Obviously probably only about 25% of what the bike is capable of. So here is my problem.

Last week I washed it and I found that the left tank half fairing has developed a vertical crack near the front. I was going to pull it this weekend and maybe fiberglass it to fix it and prevent any further issue. For the most part it is pretty accessible and looked easy enough to remove. That was until I got to the two larger screws in the front that hold it to the bottom of the tank. The heads of the screws are stripped and that may be because they are cross threaded.

I didn't have and screw extractors so I bought a set of the tapered backward threaded ones to try to back the screws out. All I have managed to accomplish was chew some more metal out of the center of the head. I had a pretty good bite on both screws and neither one budged which is why I am thinking they may be cross threaded. So I am looking for suggestions.

The to things I can think of are try to Dremel slots in the heads and hopefully they will break loose and come out. If that worked I would be able to pick up a couple of new screws for reassembly.

The other thought is less favorable in my mind. I could drill the heads off which would let me pull the part, but I would still have a threaded section stuck in the tank side and I could not securely reattach the fairing without first removing the.

Anybody ever run into this problem before? Any thoughts on the best way to proceed. I don't want to just let it go because it looks like if the crack continues I will loose about 3 inches off the front when it goes along with probably also losing the piece.

ANyway, hello and happy riding!

Bob
