Is it a good idea to upgrade from a ninja 400 to an 899?
Should I have some experience on less hp before this?
Thanks

Others in here will disagree but honestly, you’ll be just fine if you’ve spent some time on the 400 and you’re comfortable. Displacement aside, the 899 is putting down around the same hp as most 600’s with a pipe and tune. A little torque though. It’ll be a bigger bike all around but it only goes as fast as your right hand tells it to.

Thanks! I was comparing hp with other options and it is similar to a lot of 600s yeah! I was thinking the 899 or the Zx6r but the 899 has always been a dream of mine so just wanted opinions!
Will have been a bit less than 2 years on the 400 so pretty comfortable!

You’ll be replacing the rear tyre a lot more often... 899 rips

I haven't experienced that. I've owned mine for a little over a year now. Not going to lie, but the first 6 months, I went through 2 pairs of Pirellis. Not because they wore out, but I was having the magical luck of attracting nails. Fortunately, during the last 1/2 of 2019 up to now, the Pirellis have been great. I live in SF Bay Area, and my commute is about 45min (1way). I take the bike at least 2-3 times a week, but they have a lot of tread. I think I've had these tires for 6mo now doing this frequency of commute.

Search Dave Moss on YouTube, he has great tips on adjusting your suspension settings to get the bike right for your weight and height. There's several more videos and articles you can check to get some more clarity on this. But adjusting your suspension settings can help with the life of your tires.

I love my 899!

Dave moss FaceTimed me for a tune up of my “S” suspension for $80. Great guy!

as for my tyres, I’m an acceleration junkie, so a couple thousand miles and they’re ready for renewal

How do you Facetime Dave Moss? Can I facetime him alone or would I need two other people to measure for preload? Can we set up multiple bikes on facetime for $80?

I know some young men on 400's in Junior Cup that came out of The Penguin Racing School that will toast anyone on this forum on a 899. These kids RIP.
My point is weather you are on a 400 or a 1000 the concept is the same, control...........

If you’re comfortable then go for it. Just picked up a 899 after selling my 600rr. Biggest difference from 600s I would say is definitely the v twin vs. inline 4. The 899 is very torquey and at low rpms and low speeds do require more attention to the throttle than my 600rr. It does not wanna be held back, the bike truly shines in the higher rpms and gears. All in all it’s a beautiful bike, the wet mode is also available if you wanna ride the 899 in a more tamed mode.

I went from a Suzuki TS125X to a RGV250M then to a Kawasaki ZX-6R. The thoughts I have of riding the TS....this is the fastest thing ever! RGV on experiencing the power valves rotating at 8250 rpm, No this is the fastest thing ever! The list goes on. You should do what you want to do. Just dont go thinking you are Foggy/Bayliss/Corser, because none of us are. Learn the bike you choose to ride
