Hello All,

I had to replace my oil cooler gasket and the updated part number 78811191B eliminated a notch on the gasket that fits into the notch on the bottom hole of the oil cooler holes on the engine.

The gasket failed and ripped where the notch on the engine is since there is nothing support it. Pictures circled in red is what I'm referring too.

When I installed the oil cooler, I had rtv around the gasket like the factory did, is there something I'm missing here to prevent this break in the gasket again causing a leak when I put a new gasket on?

thanks!

The only way that gasket would have got damaged is if it had gotten pinched between the case and cooler. I have never seen silicone on them from factory and it's not needed. I use a small bit of grease or thin silicone to hold the gasket in place so it doesn't move when bolting down the cooler.

I ordered a replacement gasket several months ago (identical part number) and the gasket I received had the small tab you're referring to. Perhaps you got hold of a defective gasket... and as Mick1976 pointed out, the silicone isn't necessary. The shop manual doesn't call for it and I've never seen it in practice. Purchase a new gasket, clean the gasket mating surfaces, install the exchanger, and torque to spec.
