Panigale R or V4R

Hi community,

I used to own a Panigale R in 2016/17.

In early 2017 I had an accident and the bike was totalled (I took the photo above one day before). I haven't ridden a bike since.

Now, 3 years later, I'm getting the itch to own a Ducati again. I loved the R to bits, but the bike is now 5 years old.

I haven't found many reviews comparing the two (V4R vs R) so I thought it were best if I asked in the forum. Maybe there are a few members here who have owned both?


I prefer the looks of the R over the newer V4 Panigale. I'm particularly not a fan of the winglets...

On the other hand, the R can only be bought used, while the V4R can be bought new, and the V4R has maybe the newer (better?) technology.

So, what do you guys think and what do you recommend?

I don't want to consider other bikes, like V4, or V4S etc... my mind is made up for either the R or the V4R. I thought to include the 1299 R FE, but I guess the R is more special.

Just something to consider - if you think you’ll ever want another Ducati ‘R’ model with the twin motor it would be better to get a used one now as the miles/price will only increase (for the most part). Whereas the v4 models will continue to be produced and a new one will be available if you wanted to add that in future.
If you cant decide... flip a coin! Win-win lol
 
I had a 2015 R before my V4R, really glad I made the jump. The V4R is easier to ride fast, but its in another league in power. I wasn't a fan of the wings at first but you get used to them, I've grown to like them. Also, if your fitting aftermarket fairings/fairing stays, you dont have the headache of all the different bodywork, IMU angles amongst the base/S/R.

are you going to track it? Personally I love the twin and I enjoy the way it responds, if you don’t respect it your ass will be on the ground. I have a 13 1199R as my track bike, I’ve been riding 30 years on a sportbike or a motocross bike and I can’t use75% of the bikes potential. The V4R is awesome there’s no question about that And it’s easier to ride fast. IMO it depends on what you intend to do with it. It’s always nice to have something a little different, if that the case find a nice used SL and keep it forever.
 
+1 all above - I have the 1299 FE and the 2020 V4R. Keepers for sure. I had 13 and 15 Rs. V4R wins despite heat and "moustache". Do invest in some riding pants for jean substitutes you can find online or Cycle Gear so you can tolerate the heat comfortably.
 
I have been thru every generation since the 999. My fleet is still very large, 17 bikes in total. Im a huge fan of the V4/V4R. I have 2 V4's and a V4R, also 2016 MV Agusta F4 RC, and F3RC, 2016 Aprilia RSV4 Factory. So i have all the opt italian sbk's in the garage. The leap from the 1299 to the v4, was a GIANT leap forward and rideability and usable power. I still have my 1299, wont part with it, but I did part with a Anniversario to get my first V4. I had Moto-Forza hold the bike in case i wanted it back. After riding the V4 home, I never looked back... Then came another V4(#2), then the R.. the V4 vs the V4R, is a huge jump again, weird since they look the same but they are not the same bike for sure....

GO V4, you wont regret it. Oh, by the way, stay off he streets, Tracks are so much better for riding these machines and less riskier.

Acquired my '15 R used in the fall of 2018, perfect timing since the V4s were all the buzz. Amazing deal on a bike with <4k miles, full Akra exhaust, K-Tech cartridge and shock, Satos, plus extended warranty for <$16k. One HUGE savings on what this puppy was out the door in 2015. 2k track miles (one minor low side) and I could't be happier. I think I was at the end of the depreciation curve for this bike, but for tricked out R6 money the bang for the buck ratio is huge!

Sounds like dough isn't an issue for you, if not get the V4R, trick it out, and let me know when you are bored with it : )
 
I agree with Kev, i love m L2's though. I just started racing and am in love with this bike. I have 2500 miles on the clock now. no major issues, just parts vibrating off of it. At the end of hte day you need to be happy with you decision. The L2r's do not by any means lack power/speed or agility.
 
I own a 15 R and 2 friends with v4r's. Ive ridden the v4r. Its hard to say if its faster in a straight line. the R revs so fast and its revs are so light. The v4r revs for days. However, handling wise, the R switches sides so fast but the front tire feels so light. Even after a year of ownership it takes me a few mins to get comfortable on how my front tire is feeling. 2 positives coming from the v4 platform is smoother engine and counter rotating crank (it really is different). v4r also has slightly lower torque then the R therefore if streets the main, R all day. however if laptimes are the main concern, v4 platform. youd get the same best lap times with both bikes but v4r would be for ex., 15 of 20 laps great and R 10-20 laps. You have to work harder with the R and is more raw. R looks better to. Obviously im bias.
 
Another issue is the 15-17 R's have the oil blow by issue. If tracked long enough you'll have the issue even with the recall done. I have had several R's and sadly they still have the blow by issue even with the recall done. The bikes are great but once they start with the blow by issue only way around it is to rebuild the top ends as the leak downs are terrible. Usually start around 4-6K miles on them. For this reason I would go for the V4R. If you can rebuild the top ends then this is a non issue. I like the turn in of the 15-17 R better but the V4R is a faster more modern machine for sure.
 
The compression ring wearing out is not an ISSUE man...

I have the V4S and a 959, and ridden friends 1299s (non R). Based on the experiences, if I could have only one it would be the V4R. I still the the twins, and will add a 1299 R FE to the garage when I find the right deal on one, but the V4 platform is just addictive once you try it.
