Panigale R vs HP4 comparison video

Can't imagine owning both of these bikes. Would much prefer to own a variety of bikes, but not ones that are so similar.

But since he does, thanks for the video.

I agree with you and I had planned on purchasing the 2014 BMW R90 but the owner of Northern Ducati is a friend of mine and allowed me to test ride a Panigale S and, well....the rest is history :)

Great review and thanks much for taking the time to do this.

They are both awesome bikes and IMHO, it's simply a question of taste between the two. I think the HP4 is more powerful and possibly a better street machine, but the Panigale is so damn sexy and fun to ride.

I've said it before that if BMW would make that HP4 more sexy I'd be all over it. But it just looks too much like every other rice rocket... They really should steal the design team from Ducati and rework that bike. :)

Understand. I would sell the BMW and get other bikes. Super Motos are fun. Minis are fun. Dirt bikes are fun. Flat track is fun. Drag racing is fun for some people (not me). Dedicated track/race bike. You could sell the HP4 and buy a decent/nice example of a few of the above.

Of course, you can tell my choices from the bike list I own. Having two high end liter bikes would feel weird, despite their differences.

Another great comparison video by 650ib, this time featuring a dyno shootout between the two:

http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=MHHqOZwIfxs

As stated in the video, the dyno runs were five minutes apart and on the same dyno.

Results:

Panigale R
Horsepower: 178HP
Torque: 89lb ft.

BMW HP4
Horsepower: 182HP
Torque: 79lb ft.

Those numbers pan out very well for the Panigale. I'll gladly take a -4HP hit for a +10lb ft. torque advantage.

Many thanks to 650ib for the video.

And the HP4 is what, 15lbs heavier? HP4 - 379. 1199 - 364. (Dry weights)

I believe the dry weight difference is closer to 10 lbs., but the HP4's kerb weight is around 25 lbs. heavier. Most publications list the HP4 at 439 lbs., and the Panigale at 415 lbs.

Thanks for doing those video's 650ib !! We all love this , just what some of us have been waiting to see :) I had to check out your Instagram after watching lol

650ib,

Didn't you run the HP4 on the Dyno in a earlier video and was able to pull a 197 rwhp on a separate Dyno? I recall seeing the video of this being done.. I am curious if the videos showing the 179/182 numbers on the Dyno is prior to any tuning?

Great reviews of both bikes! I look forward to hearing more of your feedback as we move into Spring!!

Hopefully 650ib will chime in, but I'll try to address these questions in the meantime based on some of his statements in the comments section.

Regarding the tuning of each bike, it appears the HP4 in this video has a PC5 and is using a custom tune for the Brock's exhaust he is running. The Panigale is running the Racing Evo map that is provided with the Termi's.

The other dyno pull you are referring to is in his original comparison video. It took place at a different time, day, location, and dyno. It was not compared back to back with the Panigale in the video, but he does mention that both bikes feel equally fast, which this latest back to back dyno comparison corroborates. Here is what he stated specifically:

"The dyno that produced 197HP uses STD smoothing, has massive fans in the room which produces more of a ram air effect and the tuner is really good. Both dyno's are great and all I was looking for was a comparison between both bikes. I'm pleased to see that my precious Panigale R has almost the same HP and 10lb ft more torque than the HP4."

Thank you Duck41 for this information. I missed the comment portion and will go back and review. I know there is some more Torq and HP numbers in the R with a custom tune. I appreciate the quick turnaround time on answering my question!!!

I think this dudes name is Sean. He's funny. Go check out his 405 bench press video. Looks like he works out at Lifetime fitness outside of Cleveland. My folks live out there. Bad ass gym. I guess I have to take my bike up there next time I visit.

Hello there. Yes, I ran the HP4 on a dyno at MPH Ohio last year and it produced 197HP and a 2011 ZX10R with race cams and other mods produced 195HP. Both bikes were ran back to back. MPH uses STD smoothing correction and they have massive fans in the dyno room which help produce higher HP numbers. Also, the owner of MPH is an excellent tuner, racer and dyno tech and knows how to get the most HP out of a bike on his dyno. The HP numbers aren't as important to us as much as a HP comparison is. Meaning, the HP numbers are high at MPH and lower at Northern Ohio Ducati but what's important is that the bikes were ran back to back and we can see which bike produces the most HP and torque on that given day, on that particular dyno. I was pleased to see that my HP4 produced more HP than a ZX10R with race cams and other mods and I'm pleased to see that my Panigale R produces almost as much HP as my HP4 and more torque. The HP4 has a custom tune for the Brock's exhaust and PC5 at the time of the latest video at Northern Ohio Ducati. The Panigale R just has the Racing Evo upmap and no PC5 attached. I'm very pleased with the performance on my R and will not make any performance modifications to it.

I was going to post the dyno shoot out video on this site on Monday. I posted it on the S1000RR forum 1st to see if I'd get negative comments and thumbs down on the video which is what happened with my 'comparison video' which now has over 350 thumbs down on YouTube. Feebback from the S1000RR forum has been positive so far.

Thanks Duck41 for sending me a PM letting me know there's discussion on the dyno shoot out video.

This is almost exactly my experience with my 2012 Base with Termi Slip-Ons, up-map and MWR HE filter. It was a Cycle Gear bike night and a guy that is a retired Wyotech instructor owns a mobile Dynojet 250ix and does the runs there. My Pani put out 179 hp vs. a 2013 HP4 Comp's 182 within a half hour of each other. Same 250ix dyno, same former Wyotech instructor. So I'm even happier since my bike isn't even an R! Maybe you should add an MWR filter to your R?

I have an MWR HE filter in my bike.
