I'm new to the Ducati forums and thought it odd whenever Ducati releases a special model to pay homage to it's racing pedigree, a bunch of people start ripping on it for being a "parts bin special" or somesuch. I've seen auto manufacturers do this for years (Mustang is notorious for adding billet and calling it "special"), so I am just a simple man asking a not so simple question.

I found a video of what it would take to convert a Panigale V4S into an SP and after all is said and done, it was over $60k UDS. They even missed components in the list that I know are on there like the CF fender, heel guard and winglets.

At what point is a special variant not a "Parts bin special"?

Here is a pic of mine btw, No 105.

Maybe taken a bit out of context. I'm not sure who started that phrase but the "parts bin special" isn't a cut on the bike. In this case its yet another "special edition" built buy the brand that tends to over do the "special editions and it is made up of parts that were on previous "special editions" When mfg have too many leftover parts from a prior project, they find a way to repurpose them. The only issue I would have is is i bought a "special edition" that had parts exclusive to that release and they showed up later on a bike costing far less. Now I personally don't own any brand built bikes nor do I plan on owning any but some owners may feel somewhat slighted. The wheels on the SP are 5 years old, the suspension, older than that so yes a lot of the parts on that bike came from the parts bins of previously built bikes. No big deal. You have the S, R, 916, SP and SL. I'm guessing the SP an S with SL wheels and an R clutch and some other bits. I won't mention the numbered top clamp but I am assuming it has one? So yes, its a "parts bin bike" but not in a derogatory sence of the term. (my opinion)

The parts bin label is not about price, its about the fact you can literally buy pre existing parts and bolt up an SP. Its a great bike, and sounds like good value but there is nothing unique to it except a paint job. The comments come because Ducati is constantly churning out specials.

That makes sense. I can see how churning out a "special" variant often might disturb some owners I guess, but I think I would prefer a brand that offered diversity over exclusivity.

Good points. The "specials" are a bit over done and like Paul said, what's special about something anyone can replicate without difficulty. As far as part pricing goes, that's a bit sketchy if your going by OEM Duc pricing. Their new parts are bat .... insane for cheap OEM parts so you would def want to go aftermarket parts. The parts are better and less expensive that OEM Duc or Duc sourced parts.

Pre existing out of the parts bin as opposed to manufacturing a unique part especially for the model run. The SL was not a parts bin bike.
Uh yea it kinda was. Same wheels as the 1299SL, stock R motor and many smaller components (axles hub, controls etc) some left over from the 1299 days.

I thought you joined up with the fan boy club at Ducati Modified?
