Panigale V4 SP - Parts Bin Special?

Maybe taken a bit out of context. I'm not sure who started that phrase but the "parts bin special" isn't a cut on the bike. In this case its yet another "special edition" built buy the brand that tends to over do the "special editions and it is made up of parts that were on previous "special editions" When mfg have too many leftover parts from a prior project, they find a way to repurpose them. The only issue I would have is is i bought a "special edition" that had parts exclusive to that release and they showed up later on a bike costing far less. Now I personally don't own any brand built bikes nor do I plan on owning any but some owners may feel somewhat slighted. The wheels on the SP are 5 years old, the suspension, older than that so yes a lot of the parts on that bike came from the parts bins of previously built bikes. No big deal. You have the S, R, 916, SP and SL. I'm guessing the SP an S with SL wheels and an R clutch and some other bits. I won't mention the numbered top clamp but I am assuming it has one? So yes, its a "parts bin bike" but not in a derogatory sence of the term. (my opinion)

has the suspension they're using been around that long? the hardware?

“Disclaimer, I’m not absolutely certain. Someone with better intel than I would be a more definitive bet”

It looks like the cast bottom Ohlins electronic forks on the v4sp are the same forks that were on the 1299 (possibly re sprung)

The lower triple clamp and stem is the same as the 1299

The rear shock is a stick v4s shock

Brake rotors look the same as the 1299

Levers look to be different but share the same cast MC pieces

Axles, rear master, rear brake assembly, hub, flange ,reservoirs look the same as the 1299

Fuel pump is off the 1299

Wheels 1299 SL

Ducati have been doing this for years, and not just for 'specials'. You don't need to redesign every part for a new bike, if the existing parts are good.
I used to have a 996, it was slow, engine tuning was expensive, so I fitted a 1098 engine. It fitted straight in the frame with no need for any modification.
And, I see this kind of thing as a bonus. If you like a certain component from a previous Ducati, there's a good chance it will fit the newer bike.
Wheels, forks, triple clamps etc, so many interchangeable parts. Impossible to do on a Honda/Kawasaki/BMW.

I watched the video that was posted about this Panigale V4SP and the parts pricing . It makes some sense but you really have to take the prices of the stock V4S and subtract them and get the difference and an actual value of what the SP brings . Furthermore , I actually own this Panigale V4SP (no 380) and coming from a 18 Panigale V4S it’s a much different bike . The V4SP body work is much different then the V4S. It’s much fatter and much more of a race bike body work wise . It feels like a much different motorcycle when you’re riding it ….. I’ve never ridden a motorcycle that has the front end feel of this bike …. It legit feels so stable at any speed and the front wheel feels almost cemented to the road . It’s uncanny… if you know someone who has one and you can take it for a spin I suggest doing so . Def a different bread than the standard Panigale V4S.

Like you I went from 2018 V4S
and it’s a world of difference, an awesome upgrade. Specifically the front end feel / feedback. Lighter wheels, 520 chain and new frame certainly help.

Speaking to my panigale experience, prior to my 2018 V4S, I was on a race prepped 2013 1199 put together by TJ with ohlins bits among other critical upgrades to make it work. Recently Ive had the luxury of riding a 2020 V4R for a couple days earlier this year on track. I have well over 18k track miles on panigale platforms across the years. I love em but they take some doing to get em right … on track. Cant ride em like metric liter bikes.

Imo the V4SP feels most like the V4R.
I just completed break in on track 2 dates at Road America + 1 date at Blackhawk Farms.Very stable performed perfectly. The wings actually work ! Stability was noticeable on 2 straights where we hit 185+ front wheels tend to get light. Not anymore.

Because I like a progressive pull deeper trail braking after I spun on a set of SC1/2slicks, I added SBS dual carbon pads and brake tech rotors for my last round at RA a long fast track. Stock brake pads and rotors used for my rain rims, set of V4s rims.

I am still sorting out suspension on the rear shock but I feel good about the front after taking out 4mm pre load. Gonna work on getting the rear working a bit better perhaps change spring rate over labor day weekend.

very happy with my V4SP

Good write up. So far what are your thoughts comparing the 99 platform to the V4 platform?

initially; I thought the move to v4 was gonna be “less-than” as I REALLY like the twin platform for torque and power delivery.

well, Ducati has done something special with the v4. It sounds like a twin at low rpms and has incredible top end that builds power in a linear fashion like the twin. Not as brutal nor as unforgiving. So you give up a bit of torque you gain a lot on top with advanced electronics. Almost as svelte and they fixed some of the nuance with the frame and suspension on the v4. Riding position and style is relatively the same.

My 1199 was one of my favorite bikes over the years with 15k track miles. Now the V4sp is taking its place. It can go as fast (faster) in a more refined way.
