I'm in the middle of removing my exhaust heat shield so I can wrap the header to reduce heat. I've got the right side part of the shield off, but am having trouble removing the left side. All bolts on the shield are removed (it moves freely) and the cable ties holding the wiring to the shield have been cut. Nothing is attached to the shield.

There simple does not seem to be room to pull the shield out. Please tell me the rear subframe does not need to be removed to get the shield out.

Looking for any advice on this!

I removed mine, but I think you maybe able to just loose it and take the shield off

Fyi, the tank did have to come off and the top rear subframe bolts had to be loosened and the bottom two subframe bolts removed in order to be able to lift the subframe up enough to get the clearance to get the left exhaust shield out. There is no other way.

Thanks for this post. I am looking to do the same soon. With the sub-frame partially loose did the other half of the heat shield come out no problem or was it a bit of a tight squeeze still? Reason I ask is I do not want to scratch anything by accident. Thanks

This created enough room to remove without scratching.

What are you wrapping the exhaust with? I tried to remove the heat shield once and kinda forgot where all those frigging washers go. The parts list does not show them.

I had done this with header wrap, but then got worried about trapping all that heat in the header material as there have been header failures on completely stock bikes. So I undid this and ceramic coated the headers inside. This provides 2 benefits, reduces the heat that goes into the header material and therefore should help prevent/defer the header failure, and also reduces the heat radiated by the header that causes everyone the leg heat problems.
