I've got a BMW S1000RR, and it's front axle/wheel change is quite a lot easier than the Duke.
I know Fast Frank do a kit, but US based etc.

Bought a stainless steel allen bolt, cut the head off and weld it into the axle.

so you need a additional Allen key. whats the benefit over the special tool? aka a piece of wood with a hole and a pin thru.

The stock Ducati nut is captive, if you don't undo the pinch bolts underneath it, and have a means of unwinding the axle. Welding the head of an allen bolt inside the top of the axle allows this. It's the same as the Fast Frank but without the pull cup.
Not sure how I'd torque the axle up with a piece of wood and a pin!
