Radiator and Oil Cooler Screens

I got my first Ducati in November, and brand new unboxed 2019 Panigale V4. Coming from Harleys and a Triumph Daytona 675, I am in love with this bike and want to keep it on the road as long a possible. I ran across a good deal on some R&G radiator and oil cooler screens. I don't track my bike and ride to work, school and back and for the occasional Saturday cruise. Are these screens a good idea or will the hamper the cooling functions of my bike? Are these going to do more harm than good? Are they more of a flashy decoration piece vs being functional? I was talking with my brother who has owned bikes longer than I have and he said for his bike, a Aprilla Tuono, they are not a good idea since they restrict air flow and the air flow already isn't good on his Ape and they have notoriously underpowered cooling fans.

Congrats on the new bike.

I have those ones on my bike and it is fine with the heat. I hate the idea of a stone puncturing either the radiator or oil cooler. Firstly fluids on your tyres and you are definitely hitting the deck and secondly getting stuck somewhere.

They are just like frame sliders there in case you need them. I doubt they restrict any airflow at all. Since the front tire picks up everything and throws it right into the rad and oil cooler I think they are a must have. I have the Evotech ones.

Radiator guards are a must. My buddy had to replace ($4,000) one of his small heat exchangers on his AMG GTR a few days after receiving it due to a small rock. No thanks

Those are on my bike now and they were easy to install. I dropped it off at the Ducati workshop and picked it up the next day

I've put radiator and oil cooler guards on every single one of my bikes so far and never has an issue with heat. If you look at my bike thread, you'll see the Evotech guards fitted to the V4S. They looked factory and are a safety precaution for any rocks that might puncture your coolers. Highly unlikely, but why leave it to chance.

It's a pretty big job to fit them though. I ended up dropping the guards off to Ducati when they were fitting my Akra exhaust as they already had all the fairings off etc.

I had a 2018 V4S with no radiator guards and after 10 track days, both the oil and coolant radiators were severely damaged from impacts. Like really bashed in!
With my 2019, I had the Eoptechs installed before I picked up the bike and notice great protection and no cooling issues, though I haven't gone through a summer yet.

+1 on EP on the V4.

Had a 848 SBK in the past and got a leak. Installed protector just after repair and also on all bikes acquired after. Never been an issue.

Well....looks like I'll be picking up a radiator guard. Sounds like the Evotech is the way to go? I was originally going to get one but an experienced Ducati mechanic talked me out of it claiming the that it would make the cooling issues even worse. Now I have less than 600 miles on my R and I caught a rock in the radiator during my last track day. I'm on the hook for a replacement $$$. So pissed

They reduce airflow but not by an appreciable amount. A 30mph wind is more than enough to overcome any resistance a radiator guard would pose.

Sounds like that experienced mechanic is experienced in maintaining his job security. Probably advocates against crankcase protectors too. Definitely recommend going with a H2O or Febur unit if you're having to float the bill for the new radiator, likely cost very close to the same amount.

I'm actually quite surprised that the OEM replacement is about $600 plus another $300 in dealer labor. I'm perfectly capable of doing it myself but honestly I don't even feel like dealing with it. All of the aftermarket stuff is $3500+. I already wanted to upgrade but probably once summer approaches since the price difference is so big and my slush funds are running low with all the winter activities and holidays.

U don’t need those ....... at the service center to fit it. All u need is one good bonding day wth the bike, strip the fairings off and get to work. The. you’ll never hesitate doing any work on it. The V4 is very nice to work on

Maybe order a new OEM rad, Samco hoses, VP Stay Frosty and a nice set of radiator guards
Or spurge and get a big boy cooling system

I have Cox Racing Ti rad guards in black and they clean up the look very nice

For radiator guards I like the Evotech ones. I had bought some cheaper ones which ended up damaging my radiator when I installed them. One of the edges was sharp and when it pressed against the radiator when everything was fitted inside of the radiator shroud and it ever so slightly dug into a couple of the horizontal tubes. Just enough that it drips coolant. I threw the guards away and ordered the Evotechs which I initially passed on. I bought a new radiator but they old one is in my basement. I've been meaning to take it to a radiator shop to get repaired (prob just a TIG weld job) but haven't gotten around to it.
