So today I received my 1199. Bike is basically new, from a mechanical, look and mileage POV, but, it has a mess in the heat exchanger.
This is definitely not normal, is it?
WTF is it?

Terrible attempt at fixing a leak? I would take that to a good mech ASAP, if someone was willing to do that, no telling what other shady stuff is going on inside that engine.

This is a bike which has seen the track ... the tape on wheel weights tell me.
I doubt a leak. More safety measure against bolts getting out IMO.

Actually now that I look at it again, I would agree attempt to keep bolts in.

A brief search led me to believe that's silicone.
Alternate way to secure bolts without safety wire.
He just went overboard with it :D

I touched it yesterday, and it has silicone consistency.
My first thought was loctite too, but that typically goes in the thread, not outside.
I guess I will leave it there, for now.

looks like hi temp silicone, trying to do it the easy cheap way instead of safety wire. Pretty hideously done.

Lick it and describe it to us. We can identify silicone sealant by the taste. Let us know.

NOLA

I think I'll keep my tongue out of synthetic parts which have been around combustion engines :D

Seriously, that is clearly silicone, consistency tells me. A whole mess of it.
I am being tempted to try to remove it, but not sure if that's going to create a whole new mess. Silicone can be pretty stubborn.

But, there is more.
The guy must have been in love with that silicone.
I guess, in order to make the oil filter cover removal easier, he stuck a bolt on it, so he could pull that thing off without prying it with picks.
A 10 for inventiveness, a 0 for implementation.

The good news are, the bike runs great and feels spotless (from a mechanical and aspect POVs) besides the above.

Glad you were able to save this machine from the crazed man from the Permatex Factory!

I hope that crap isn't hiding anything, and since you say she runs fine, and hopefully sounds good too, you are ok.

The bike must be as heavy as a s1000rr now with all the additional silicone ;)

I will, the oil (as soon as I get the cover to replace the old one).
The brakes and clutch fuilds are as clear as mountain water, so they must have done it very recently.
Need to check coolant.
