Removing rear shock, to install new spring

Wow, that seems expensive...!

Think we need to persuade Andy to productise his ride height tool. 😀

That's what they cost. The Alpha one for a BMW is c£1k. They don't sell a lot of them.
Fairly easy to make one yourself though.

I made one my self in fact ive done a couple. What is missing is the cross reference datum say like for the one used on a 998 999 etc..... if you do it just for your self then you have a start middle and finish, but you cant compare to another without physically putting your gauge on to another bike.

Pick up some aluminum bar from the local metal shop. Fashion some pieces to triangulate it and then drill some holes for it to mount to the bike in a similar way as the real one.

You either put the weight through:
  • Subframe
  • Rearsets
  • Exhaust
I would take my chances with the subframe. It'll hold a passenger cantilevered at the end. I can't find a weight limit for the passenger in the manual so I'm sure there's high degree of safety factored in. But the support needs to be on the frame and not the tank or bodywork.

If I ever have to pull the shock, I'll be making a subframe adapter out of block of wood that secures to the passenger peg bolt holes. I'll then remove the fender and use a scissor jack against the tire (in gear so it doesn't move) to support and allow some form of adjustment.

It's not clear in my pictures above but I have these where the passenger foot pegs used to be:

Like SuperDomestique commented, I also think that if the subframe is strong enough to hold a passenger it is plenty to support the rear section up in the air.

Nope, wasn't an issue at all. I used a short ratchet extension to get at the bolts from the left side and even had room for the torque wrench.

I did have to take off the lower fairings though in order to remove the silver stock exhaust shrouds. I couldn't get to the lower shock bolt otherwise. Then I just moved the swingarm up and down to get at the linkage bolts.

I did near the same thing with an 1199 in my old garage which had exposed ceiling joists. Nylon strap to support the bike. With the V4, with the stock cans you can use a bit of wood and a floor jack. With the full Akrapovic, a bit of a 4x4 on a floor jack on the rear suspension mount.

I did not want to put all the weight of the bike on the sub frame
It's not all of the weight. The front is still supported.
