For the lucky ones who have their's, what's the script with the run-in?

600 miles @ up to 6krpm (limiter set as this until you get your first service?), but then what?

Seen on the forums that it's then a further 600 miles, limited to 7krpm. Is this right?, and do you then have to go back to dealer for a 2nd service, to get the limiter re-set?

Cheers H

My Dealer told me to break it in like you would ride normally - This topic has been brought up numerous times and debated heatedly. I just thought I would stir the pot again :D

600 miles at up to 6K with no limiter. The orange warning region of the rev counter moves down to 6K, but you can rev as much as you like.

After the oil change at 600 miles the limit rises to 7K for a further 1200 miles. Exactly the same, no hard limit its just the the orange region of the rev counter start at 7K.

That depends if you're on your way to Starbucks wearing an icon vest and DC runners or going for a real ride. :D

So your telling me that I have to run for 1800 with a 7k limit? I don't think so

My bike will be getting 6k from 0 miles and after the first 400mikes will be getting 8k, after the first service it will be having the lot albeit with being ragged to within an inch if it's life

I hate when my runners get dirty from the shifter;) Do they make 3m tape to keep them clean LOL

And how the hell can I break in 1800 miles when my Starbucks is only 5 miles away. Crap I'll have to go to the one in the next town :D

I think i might be the first one to have had the first service (earlier today) Rather than re post here the link to the thread http://ducati1199.com/ducati-1199/554-first-service-complete.html#post6923

Good news is there isnt a 7k limit after first service :)

Good post Jay and thank fck for that. The thought of being limited to 7krpm over the mountain wi my mates rc8r pulling away is just to painful to imagine. Just need time to get the first service in before the last week in May.

Youd stick with him even under 7k ;-)

Cheers for posting that, nice vid.

Nice section of road that.....but not so open to stretch its legs!

Would you estimate that you can cruise doing 75-80mph and stay under 6,000RPM?

I've been up to 100 and nudged just over 6k. It was perfectly useable at that range. Youre advised to still give a lot of throttle but just short shift to keep the revs down.

I am getting fed up of everybody pointing out that page. Don't dare to do that to your Panigale!

Why ?

Because there is an initial run-in done by Ducati, the way described by your link.

Which means that what's described on the link is already done when you get your bike. So, just do as the manual says, and you'll be fine.

Braintrash - If ducati has completed the break in as you stated, then why worry about any breakin method at all? I think there is truth somewhere in between. I think you need to bring the reves up and allow engine breaking but not red line it. I will probably maintain below 8,000 for the breakin for 600 miles then full on. But that's just my preference I have no evidence other than my Multistrada which runs perfect with the same break in method.

My dealer recently orgtanised an open evening and the factory trained mechanic too us through the various electronic systems on the panigale - the various ECU's and the canbus system.
If your pani goes pop at any time then they can interrogate the ecu's and find ou exactloy what you were doing at the time and also any extreme stress' which the bike may have been subjected to in its history........speed , revs , gear etc

if you intend a 'hard' break in for your bike just be aware that your 'technique' might become know to Ducati in the event of a problem....just saying !

Guys each bike is NOT "ran in" at Ducati. Each bike is merely ran for a few mins just to make the fluids circulate and other checks.

Only a small percentage of units for each model get ran longer and even ridden a short ways just for Quality Assurance.

Our bikes gets to our dealers with less that 1 mile on the clock, then the dealer have to ride it after set up. I've never seem more than 2-4 miles on the clock when I've picked up a Duc.

Manufactures use a certain kind of oil on new vehicles, including cars. Thicker viscosity to help collect metal particles collected in your engine. I personally will maybe flirt with 7-8K on the revs during breaking in but that's it ;).

And like I advised before, at service, your tech can see what a naughty boy/girl you've been. Max revs, max speed....all that. And if excessively abused they can deny any warrantee claims you ever have. Just flood for thought .
